MINNEAPOLIS — A former Winona Area Catholic Schools finance officer
was sentenced Friday in Minneapolis to more than three years in prison
for embezzling $787,480 from the schools over five years.
Colleen J. Gardner, who said she gambled away most of the money at
Treasure Island Resort & Casino near Hastings, Minn., must pay
$130,766 to the schools, $114,715 to the Diocese of Winona, $270,000
to the Catholic Mutual Group and $300,000 to St. Paul Traveler’s
Insurance Co., as ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Michael Davis.
The judge gave the 52-year-old woman 30 days to report to prison,
likely at a women’s penitentiary in Illinois, said Karen Bailey,
spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s office in the Twin Cities. Gardner
could serve less than the 37-month sentence with good behavior, she
said.
Gardner pleaded guilty to taking cash intended for deposit into five
of the schools’ bank accounts, writing checks to herself and
falsifying school financial records to conceal her swindle. She also
pleaded guilty to filing fraudulent U.S. income tax returns for 2002
and 2003, understating her income, the U.S. Attorney office said.
Gardner was a Winona Area Catholic Schools finance officer from July
1986 to September 2003. Her crimes occurred from January 1998 to
September 2003. The Diocese of Winona discovered money missing two
years ago.
Winona Area Catholic Schools is seeking more than $1.7 million — equal
to its annual budget — from Gardner in a civil case.
Principal Scott Walker said the school system and its attorney would
discuss in the next few weeks whether Friday’s sentence and
restitution changes pursuit of a civil settlement.
