Thank WHO (Official Thanksgiving Proclamations), Part 15 |
This month, I am through official thanksgiving proclamations, leading
up to Thanksgiving. After all, if they start Halloween shows and
events in September, it must be time to start Thanking God.
(From my own book, A Nation Under God)...
Massachusetts - 6th state
State Motto: "Ense Petit Placidam sub Libertate Quietem"
(Peace, but Peace Only Under Liberty)
Thanksgiving Proclamation - 1861
"A PROCLAMATION FOR A DAY OF PUBLIC FASTING,
HUMILIATION AND PRAYER.
"The season has arrived when it becomes the people of Massachusetts,
obediently to the pious and venerable custom of the Commonwealth, to
write in the observance of their Annual
Fast.
"I do therefore, with the advice and consent of the Council, appoint
THURSDAY, the fourth day of April next, a day of FASTING, HUMILIATION
and PRAYER.
"And I respectfully request the people of every persuasion, with one
consent, to lay aside all unnecessary and inconsistent auctions of
business and pleasure, to repair to their usual places of public
worship, and to dedicate the day to earnest self examination and to
the service of God in the exercises of Devotion.
"Let us penitently confess, renounce and forsake our Sins, and
imploring forgiveness of the same, through the Infinite and Divine
Mercy, seek for strength of purpose, purity of heart, disinterested
affection and abiding faith, rightly to discern, obediently and
cheerfully to observe all the duties and obligations of our future
lives.
"Let us recognize the Providence of the Almighty Rules of Heaven and
Earth, in all the affairs of Nations and of Men. Let us humble
ourselves in the recognition of our own vanity and foolishness,
whenever we have set up our own wisdom or will against His Supreme
Intelligence, Love and Power.
"Let us remember that the Divine requirement to do justly, and to love
mercy, and to walk humbly with God, rests upon all men everywhere, and
upon all nations: that there can be no national wickedness without
individual guilt; no real calamity independent of human folly or
misconduct, and no suffering unendurable save the misery of Remorse.
"Let us carry on our hearts, before Him who is "no respecter of
persons," the cause of our Country, the rights and welfare of all her
people, of whatever section, race, color, or condition: And let us be
willing, in all respects, to do and to receive, and even to desire,
whatever He shall deem to be the best for us, who ruleth all things
well.
"Given at the Council Chamber, this seventh day of March, in the year
one thousand eight hundred and sixty-one, and the eighty-fifth of the
Independence of the United States of America."
