Thank WHO (Official Thanksgiving Proclamations), Part 3 |
I will be going through official thanksgiving proclamations, through
out the month of November. After all, if they start Halloween shows
and events in September, it must be time to start Thanking God.
(From my own book, A Nation Under God)...
Connecticut - 5th state
State Motto: "Qui Transtulit Sustinet"
(He Who Transplanted Still Sustains)
Thanksgiving Proclamation - 1842
"Gratitude to Almighty God for His manifold blessings, both
spiritual and temporal, is the first and highest duty of intelligent
beings.
"I do, therefore, recommend that Thursday, the seventeenth
day of November next, be observed by the people of this State as
a day of Christian Thanksgiving and Prayer; and I do invite them,
on that day, to render to their Almighty and Beneficent Father the
sincere homage of fervent and grateful hearts, for His never
ending goodness, not only by appropriate religious exercises in
their temples of public worship, but by feeding the hungry,
clothing the naked, visiting the sick, and administering consolation
to the afflicted.
"Given under my Hand and the Seal of the State, at Hampton,
this eighteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and forty-two, and of the Independence
of the United States of America the sixty-seventh."
