Object: Thank WHO (Official Thanksgiving Proclamations), pt. 1
After reviewing a recent article that gave a 2100 year history of
thanksgiving without, even once, mentioning who it is that is being
thanked, I felt this series was important. As such, I will be going
through official thanksgiving proclamations, through out the month of
November. After all, if they start Halloween shows and events in
September, it must be time to start Thanking God.
(From my own book, A Nation Under God)...
Arizona - 48th state
State Motto: "Diat Deus"
(God enriches)
Proclamation of Thanksgiving -1904
"The closing of a year of exceptional prosperity and plenty brings to
the people of Arizona an opportunity to express their unfaltering
faith in the beneficence of Almighty God, and it is with an abiding
trust that we again welcome the season of Thanksgiving.
"Let it bring to our minds in grateful acknowledgment all the
blessings that have come to us; let us be thankful that the general
health of the people of Arizona has been good, that our mines, fields
and forests have yielded abundantly, that in all lines of industry our
people have prospered, and honest toil and endeavor have been richly
rewarded, leading to the contentment of all.
"In recognition of the many gifts of Providence, I, ALEXANDER O.
BRODIE, Governor of the territory of Arizona, do hereby recommend, in
conformity with the proclamation of the President of the United
States, that THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 1904, be observed throughout the
Territory by devotion to Thanksgiving and prayer, remembering those
who are in need by acts of Christian charity and brotherly love, thus
proving our worthiness of the Divine blessings of Almighty God.
"In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the Great
Seal of the Territory of Arizona to be affixed. Done at the Capitol,
in the City of Phoenix, this eleventh day of November, A. D. 1904."

Pretty impressive history, since the pilgrims got here less than 400
years ago. Of course the Thanksgiving story is fake, but that is
beside the point.

Well, I'm guessing that he's talking about "harvest festivals".
There is a Christian tradition of that -- and of course,
also in "pagan" cultures around the world as well.
We'll see when he points us to what he drew that from.

Our archetypal image of the first Thanksgiving portrays
the groaning boards in the woods, with the Pilgrims in
their starched Sunday best next to their almost naked
Indian guests. As a holiday greeting card puts it, "I is
for the Indians we invited to share our food." The
silliness of all this reaches its zenith in the handouts
that schoolchildren have carried home for decades,
complete with captions such as, "They served pumpkins
and turkeys and corn and squash. The Indians had never
seen such a feast!" When the Native American novelist
Michael Dorris's son brought home this "information"
from his New Hampshire elementary school, Dorris pointed
out that "the Pilgrims had literally never seen such a
feast," since all foods mentioned are exclusively
indigenous to the Americas and had been provided by [or
with the aid of] the local tribe. )

You guys know I know nothing about history, right? I get all sources
wrong, right? So, don't waste your time. I can't possibly be right
about either the article I mentioned or the official quotes...right?
You already know it all, anyway.
