The marching morons - For God' sake don't make them learn anything |
Bristol University - tuition fees soon to be £3,000 pa - has decided to
reduce lectures from three a week to one on the grounds that pupils are
being "over-taught" [Ye Gods, three lectures a week is little enough.]
This diminution in teaching is being sold as - wait for it - a
"strengthening of student-centred learning",.
In addition first years exams are being abolished and the university has
announced it will be awarding more first class degrees .The Daily
Quislingraph (24 June)
The triumph of the university as business over university as academe. RH

you're just trying to defend your out of date degree in parroting...
if you'd had to do any independent work your arms would have
fallen off....

No, that's a fictional realisation of a computer by the name of Marvin.

Presumably that's R.E. :-)
on the grounds that pupils are
being "over-taught" [Ye Gods, three lectures a week is little enough.]
The lectures cover the whole ground. But in my daughter's
experience are not compulsory, and take place in a lecture theatre
with 199 other students. That has to be cheap to provide. The
notes that the lecturer uses are available on the university
intranet web pages anyway.
OTOH *Seminars* take place in groups of 7 or 8 and are 2 way
interactive learning sessions, provided at great cost. These are
both valuable and compulsory, daughter can't miss more than 1 per
year without having an unpleasant interview with her Dean of
Studies.
This diminution in teaching is being sold as - wait for it - a
"strengthening of student-centred learning",.
Very sensible. One of her friends studying business and politics
found there was an IT module in her course, which turned out to be
a "Goons Guide to Gripping the (basics of) the Microsoft Windows
Operating System". She knew all that already so she didn't need to
attend the lectures.
In addition first years exams are being abolished
A trend extant for a few years now. Alternatively they take exams
but the results not significant in terms of their final degree.
The first year being much of a "Foundation Year" to bring all the
intake up to the same degree of competance.
and the university has
announced it will be awarding more first class degrees .The Daily
Quislingraph (24 June)
Most first degree students have to do a year's post graduate
learning of some sort. It might end up that that final grading
will eventually be the one that actually matters.

You are, of course, a complete fucking *****.
The first PC step is to reduce the influence of exams on results on the
grounds that some find them difficult.
The second step is to reduce the influence of coursework on results on the
grounds that some may be unable to attend because they have babies on the
tit, have drug or alcohol problems etc etc.
The third step is to reduce the influence of attendance of results.
The fourth step is to reduce the effect of the inability to fill out the
fucking application form.
Sic transit gloria.
