The marching morons - Science GCSEs too hard? No probs, take the science out them. |
"A radical new science GCSE that requires pupils to debate recycling,
organic farming and the uses of cannabis, but spend less time on
traditional science, has produced record results
"The new syllabuses, with such titles as "Twenty first century science"
and "Science for the citizen", were commissioned by . the
Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, and from next year, will
replace the double science GCSE taken by 80 cent of teenagers.
"Schools taking part in a pilot of the new GCSE this summer achieved
grades that were well above those gained in the current science GCSE."
Sunday Telegraph 11 9 2005
Mmmm...your students will be arriving unable to count up to ten soon, Dr

As a matter of fact, it would appear difficult to carry on any
meaningful debate on at least two of the above three without recourse
to "traditional" scientific concepts.
It would be refreshing to find that GCSE students should be required to
debate anything given the very low demands made upon linguistic
expression in the papers I am familiar with.

It's 'cos it's cheaper to have tick box multiple choice questions and
mark them with a computer/scanner.

Strange concept. The students learn more science and Robbie complains.
Well they aren't being taught the way that I want so I don't like
their learning more is what he implies.

You should see here in the States. If teachers
don't deliberately mislead students (creationism,
abstienence-only education) there are protests.

Yes, I recommended to some friends that they test students on Gilgamesh
and perhaps the Aztec creation stories. SHould be fun when some
minister has their kid come back with tales of God needing blood
sacrifices from school.

Who says that modern schooling doesn't earn you money?
My first love, (the only person to have less time off than me in the
last two years at school,) got 6 grade As and 3 grade Bs back in 1981.
My wife got 7 grade As and two Bs at O Level, the previous year
(unbeknownst to me,) and then went on to get 3 grade As and 2 ones at
special level, in 1982.
So you can imagine how I felt I won't be losing any money, by offering
my niece =A35 for a C, =A310 for a B, and =A315 for an A, when she doesn't
know what a noun, an infinitive, what 7 times 8 is, who was the leader
of the Italians, the Russians, and the French during world war two, or
how to say I'm hungry in french. (I could continue.)
Nevertheless, I'm going to have to stump up =A3150 this weekend when I
see her, because she got all As, Bs and A*s.
Who says education doesn't get you anywhere. Fucking shocking.
