The World: Born in 4004 BC? |
"Was Ussher a Dunce?
"In a publication produced by progressive creationist Dr. Hugh Ross
(who promotes the big bang, a local Flood, and age of the earth of
millions of years and nonliteral days of creation, etc.), a cartoon
mocks Archbishop Ussher. It characterized him as a "dunce" because
he proposed that God created the universe around 6,000 years ago,
and the days of creation were literal days. But was he a dunce as
Dr. Ross portrays?"

Nope. Given Ussher's assumptions -- the literal truth of the Bible --
then his calculations were a remarkable piece of scholarship. The
Scriptural records he used were of course fragmentary and incomplete,
and so Ussher had to try to match up Biblical records with other, secular
source and thus fill in the holes.
And in fact Stephen Jay Gould wrote an admiring essay about this
very topic.
Don't you get tired of those knowledgable about evolution reliably
knowing, not just more than you about evolution, but more than
you about creationist arguments as well?
