New York Blade - New York,NY,USA
[excerpts]
Last Monday, New York Times readers woke to the shocking headline:
Religious Push Against Gay Unions. The article said that about 50 prominent
religious leaders, "including seven Roman Catholic cardinals and about a
half-dozen archbishops," had signed a petition supporting the
constitutional amendment to block same-sex marriage, likely coming to vote
in June.
The article argued that what was striking about the petition was the
involvement of high-ranking Catholic officials—specifically, 16
bishops—whereas the 2004 Federal Marriage Amendment push was led by
evangelical Protestants.
But to Matt Foreman, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian
Task Force, it was just more of the same. "I did not find it remarkable,
and barley newsworthy frankly," Foreman said. "Wherever we have had an
anti-marriage amendment, the Catholic church has been actively involved in
pushing it."

The Americans United for the Separation of Church and State have also been
mobilizing progressive clergy around the amendment vote. Twenty-three
national religious organizations have signed a letter being sent to
senators, including the Alliance of Baptists, the American Jewish
Committee, the Episcopal Church USA, the National Sikh Center and
Protestant Justice Action.
"We’re trying to make the argument that the marriage amendment is really an
attempt to take the view of marriage favored by certain conservative
denominations and make that the law of everybody—which we believe infringes
on the rights of those religious denominations that choose to recognize
same-sex unions," said Rob Boston, assistant director of communications for
Americans United. "Those include the Unitarian Universalists, United Church
of Christ, some Jewish denominations and others."

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
