EDMONTON/630 CHED - The family of an Edmonton-area teen who apparently
committed suicide while in the child welfare system say authorities
didn't do enough to fully reunite him with his family.
More than 80 people gathered in a city park to remember the 17-year-old,
who cannot be named under provincial law. The teen's older sister says
she and her brother were just starting to develop a relationship when he
went into foster care at the age of 12.
She says her brother had become depressed, in part because he was about
to leave a group home to live on his own.
Officials believe the teen was committing suicide when a train hit him
in the city's north end in April 2006.
Edmonton social worker Briana Olsen says many youth in foster care end
up living on the streets and die tragic deaths.
