I haven't thought about it in awhile, but someone pointed out on a late
night show that they hated their freckles and I have taken offense :->
I have a unique perspective on this as an educator, having freckles and
having taught every grade and most subjects through High School Senior.
Very, very young children WILL ask out of the blue questions. They will
ask their school teacher these questions about their environment and the
people around them. I had it happen in class once, 3rd or fourth grade.
The dreaded question: "Any questions?" That's asking for open assault
for anybody who hasn't been there. At that age there will never not be
a question and it rarely involves the recent discussion.
Basically, it's what makes people's skin different colors. Melanin.
Most common to those of fair (Light) skin (Red Hair). The skin reacts
to protect itself from damaging UV rays and more often than in others
and creates an erratic protection that can kick off cancerous skin cell
patterns. People who have freckles should take extra precautions to
protect their skin from direct sunlight for extended exposure. Extra
sunscreen suffices in most cases.
Now to a child that young, the real question is, "What happened to you
to make you different from me? Why are you different?"
So, what are freckles?

Unless you're a teacher.
Then it's, *ominous atmosphere of dread* "I GET A FRECKLE *dramatic
pause* EVERY SINGLE TIME I LEARN SOMETHING NEW!"
I can't wait for age spots :-)

(Skin color is skin deep and I like people with freckles. Vo-Tech
nowadays.)
