Why church and state are separated

Many Fencepost writers have commented on separation of church and state
issues lately. Here is one I hope will amuse.
Many people question why it is impermissible to publicly post the Ten
Commandments in courthouses. The real reason is that you cannot post "Thou
Shalt not Steal, Thou Shalt not Commit Adultery and Thou Shalt not bear
False Witness" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians.
It creates a hostile work environment!

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.

Very funny, and true.
The real reason is that (state) is reality and (church) is fantasy.

Good one!!
On the serious side, however, the posting of the Ten Commandments or Statues
of an open bible serve as a visual reminder for those elected officials just
how flagrantly they are violating American law, violate the 'spirit' of
separation of church and state, and their wanton disregard and contempt for
it.
Who are these people who can't hide their disdain for the separation of
church and state and American law? Hindus, or Buddhists?

I often wonder if the nation's retailers have thought through the
ramifications of "Thou shalt not covet"....
