Writer should issue an apology
To the Editor:
In response to letter writer Paul Dorman and his anti-Catholic tirade, a
few points. All religious leaders involve themselves in our political
system; cases in point, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton, the
Rev. Pat Robertson, etc. All are active in politics and try to influence
the electorate. Is Dorman suggesting that Protestants, Jews and Muslims
have a right to free expression, but Catholics should be seen and not
heard?
And as for the "separation of church and state," the Constitution never
said that. The establishment clause states that Congress shall not
establish a state religion. The quote that Dorman and his ilk like to use
is from former Justice Hugo Black, a onetime member of the Ku Klux Klan,
who was attempting to paraphrase Thomas Jefferson. Dorman should be advised
that you can't separate bigotry against our church or its clergy and our
members as a whole. Dorman owes every Catholic in New Jersey an apology.

.. . . You can't understand a phrase such as "Congress shall make no law
respecting an establishment of religion" by syllogistic reasoning. Words
take their meaning from social as well as textual contexts, which is why "a
page of history is worth a volume of logic." New York Trust Co. v. Eisner,

That philosophy 'snipit' helped to get me, and my crew, through a good
many combat missions and far too many scary, inflight, emergencies.
It has also played a significant role in helping me to expose the
plethora of radical Christian propaganda and lies that we find at
almost every media turn.
