You are nothing special...thank God! |
Recently, I was reflecting on the fifth of the five arch foes that I
have in my book, The Christian Superhero Training Guide, that all
Christians will face ... Pride. As I was thinking I discovered that
our culture (and many churches) are projecting this threat to
Christians without knowing it, hidden in the phrase "you are
special." Many churches have picked up on this and started telling
their congregations, "God made you unique to fulfill the purpose for
your life." Here are many reasons I have reasoned that show this is
false...
1. In many places in Scripture, it tells the man that trusts God that
God will bless "all that YOU find for your hands to do" or "whatsoever
you find to do [for work]", or such.
2. Did God call you to buy food from a grocery store or pay rent or
breathe air? If so, God HAS called you to do many things that He
called others [most people] to do, as well.
3. When Jesus called His apostles, He didn't tell even ONE of them to
change their job. They were still fishermen or tentmakers or
whatever, AND they had a message to preach, too.
4. To say that God has made you special means God made you better
than others (at something). However, Scripture tells us that we are
to see ourselves as LESS than others, not more.
5. Look at the characters of the Bible. Were they special BEFORE God
used them, or where they special BECAUSE God used them? The latter,
of course. So, it wasn't them that was special but God was special.
Without God they were nothing. Jesus said "without me you can do
nothing." In fact, before Jesus caused Peter to catch a ship full of
fish, he'd caught almost nothing....thus, a rather BAD fisherman.
6. Finally, and this one seals the deal by itself, look at the whole
experience of humankind, not just current day. For the past few
hundred years, we have had schools that let you get educated and feel
that you could do "whatever you want." However, before that time,
would the son of a fisherman have questioned for a second what job
they were going to do? No! They were going to be a fisherman. The
same was said of the sons of carpenters, soldiers, or even kings.
While, if you were born a woman, your future was set...you were going
to be someone's wife and mother. My point is this. If God didn't
have a predestined job for them to do, why should you think God would
be different to you?
However, my final point is this. We should thank God that we are
nothing special, for ALL people fail God, all people can repent, all
people can be saved, and all people can receive the promises of
God....none are excluded for being specially wicked.
Thank God we are so common.

Oh, Michael doesn't care about God's morality, only his
absolute power (or at least he's been told that god has
absolute power, and he semms to have bought it)
Some examples, to demonstrate the ethical depth and
subtlety of his thinking:
Everything god does is okay by virtue of His absolute power.
It is His absolute power, not His care, that deems Him worthy of
worship.
Man adores Him and worships Him because of His power.
God is superior because of His absolute power.
A being with absolute power has NO flaws.
God has absolute power; that is justification ENOUGH.
When I look for a god to worship, all I care about is how powerful
the god is. Nothing else is relevant.
All that matters is how much POWER a leader has.
Power trumps ALL. That is why the Jews worshipped God; because of
His POWER.
All that matters about God to us is that e has the power to cast
people into Hell for all eternity.
On the morality of casting people into Hell:
Why not provide television images of
the suffering of the damned in order to entertain the saved?
If you were to go to Heaven, would you not pass eternity by mocking,
deriding, and laughing at those suffering eternal torment in Hell? I
certainly would.
And on God and the murder of babies:
God, by His virtue opf absolute power, has the right to kill five
hundred inocent children.
Which is why God ordered Israel to slaughter the unborn, so that they
never will [teach false worshop].
Those were the unborn of demon-worshipping, child-sacrificing pagans
whose only rightts are death and Hell.
Do you think Israel would have been hit with all those suicide
bombers if they exterminated those sand Nazis down to the last baby as
God ordained?

The might be more compelling if there were any indication that
this story every actually took place. (you'd think that
those compulsive record-keepers, the Egyptians, might
have jotted down a quick note or two when every oldest son
of man and beast throughout the entire land was offed
in one night).

Which of course did not happen, since there is no evidence that the
Egyptians ever kept a horde of Hebrews around, or that they suffered
any of the plagues.
Unverifiable legends are not "proof", especially legends that include

In any event, God or no God, being more powerful does not necessarily
mean "better". The aforementioned rapist and child molester are more
powerful than their victims. But the above argument clearly claims
that they are not "better".
So who can overthrow God?

Satan apparently thinks he can AND that the effort is worth the
punishment for failure. Else why would he try it?
If God exists, every killing that He does is justified by virtue of
His position as Lord of Lords and King of Kings, so He is not a
murderer.
It is your position that a king cannot commit murder, and that the
rulers are above the laws that they apply to others? ***** Nixon and

If God does not exist, then He is not capable of murder, so He is
not a murderer.
There are a lot of murderers in detective fiction. They aren't real,
but they are murderers.

No one argues on the Usenet that unicorns are omniscient or
omnipotent.
No one claims that they can steer hurricanes away from cities by
praying to unicorns. No one claims that in ancient days people were
fishermen because unicorns intended them to be fishermen (things the
poster who started this thread has claimed).
No one posts scriptures which claim that unicorns have every
benevolent virtue and yet that anyone who doesn't worship unicorns in
precisely the right way will suffer eternal punishment and damnation,
including little children die in infancy, but who are condemned for
eternity solely because they had mythical ancestors named Adam and Eve
who did something wrong.
(Nor do people go to war in the name of unicorns to kill others who do
not believe in unicorns or who do not worship unicorns in the correct
way.)

not God, Himself, if man will but trust Him. You cannot, so that is a

and I don't preach the law but faith, so that is also false, on your
