What if Artificial Intelligence was so advanced that things like cars,
ships, computers actually do "exist" and have personality?
What if the reason you get attached to your cars and give them names, or
feel lost without your computer is that they are sentient and feel things
for you too?

Cars and ships cannot be intelligent. Nobody says their *body* is
intelligent. Living bodies can still be brain-dead.
Similarly, you can install AI in a car, but the intelligence belongs
to the AI unit, not the car.
It might make sense to say a computer is intelligent, however, because
by `computer' we mean the thing that is realising the intelligence.
What if the reason you get attached to your cars and give them names, or

Even if they were sentient, and I believe I've shown this to be
impossible, they do not express that sentience to us. If they did, we
would not be in any doubt about it, just like we are not in any doubt
about the sentience of each other.
We doubt cars are sentient, so they do not express their sentience to
us. There's nothing more to consider; the rest (if there is any) is
inaccessible.

We already have cars, ships and a pile of computers !
Having transport that could make decisions for itself would be dangerous.

[j] Are you suggesting then that there could be an 'artificial'
existence and personality?
Descartes thought about his own existence and personality this way. But
he called them illusions. And how then can an AI commodity come to know
the meaning of Descartes' certainty about existence unless there is a
'real' dilemma about what might be true in their own artificial world?
What if the reason you get attached to your cars and give them names,
or feel lost without your computer is that they are sentient and feel
things for you too?
[j] If you ever had a lost 'labor of love' with a person then I suspect
you may understand that these AI commodities will not sell well past
their 2nd generation. Now I can imagine the possibility of my car
running off with my girlfriend in addition to my girlfriend running off
with my car. Who needs it?
Not to worry though, corporations will dumb down the AI commodity field
for generations of profit thereby proving that AI will forever be both
artificial and dumb compared to humans. But dogs will still rule humans
in the world.

George Bush has a heart attack and dies.
He goes to hell where the devil is waiting for him. I don't know what to do

George thought that sounded pretty good, so he agreed. The devil opened the
first room. In it was Richard Nixon and a large pool of water; he kept
diving in and surfacing empty handed over and over and over. Such was his
fate in hell. "HELL No!" George said. "I don't think so. I'm not a good
swimmer and don't think I could do that all day long."
The devil led him to the next room. In it was Tony Blair with a
sledgehammer and a room full of rocks. All he did was swing that hammer, time
after time after time. "No! I've got this problem with my shoulder. I would
be in constant agony if all I could do was break rocks all day!" commented
George.
The devil opened a third door. In it, George saw Bill Clinton lying on the
floor with his arms and legs spread out. Bent over him was Monica Lewinsky,
doing what she does best. George Bush looked at this in disbelief for a
while and finally said,"Yeah, I can handle this." The devil smiled and

Hi,
Your post is very interesting. However, I must tell you that there are
grammatical issues when one ascribes intentions or qualia to
non-living things.
When we talk about the ‘intentions of a computer', i.e. what it is
made for, we are not attributing it to have a consciousness. When we
talk about our ‘cars' behavior' it is not to say it has a ‘will',
(although some people may dispute me on this.)
When we say we have intentions, it is not the same as to say a
computer may have intentions, i.e. a descriptive functionality. The
two words have similar usages, but the ‘intentions' of usage carry a
slightly different meaning.
For us, it means a functionality of a possible disposition or will.
For a computer, it is the design of what it is made for. Computers do
not posit their own existences existentially. But people do.
The philosophical thought and imagination are interesting in relating
the two worlds together by way of a similar usage of ‘intention' or
‘feeling', but in the end, we must admit that they are only similar.
They are not the same. Again, such philosophical imaginative skill is
poetic, but in the end, they are only poetic.
This is not to say that A.I. is impossible, but it is certainly not
descriptive of our present usage of ‘feeling' or ‘intention.'
Consciousness in terms of mind is an abstract understanding. This
follows parallel concerns of Daniel Dennett, Gilbert Ryle and Alfred
North Whitehead.
To them, consciousness is a series of dispositional issues. Since they
are dispositional, even though real in terms of possibilities, can
only exist in theory. Possibilities are not actuality. Therefore there
is nothing concrete about them to ‘feel.' It is just a peculiar way of
speaking. It follows on Ryle's analysis of the mind, which he calls a
ghost in the machine. The mind is not a concrete thing, i.e. the
ghost, nor can it collapse down to a thing, i.e. a brain. It is a set
of possible acts choices and therefore can only be in the abstract.
The mind in our language by custom is listed as a pronoun. But it may
not be something we can point to as a pronoun. It is what Ryle called
a ‘mistake in category', or what Wittgenstein might have believed a
‘mistake in grammar.' We think it has concreteness, but in the end it
does not.
If A.I. makers can make a computer that can ‘soul search' i.e. answer
to such questions as who am I? What must I do? How can I live with
myself with the things that I do? Which are discussion of about one's
possibilities, then I would definitely say it could feel. These
feelings are much more than qualia or perceptions. They are about
possibilities of one's existence.
To look for a metaphysical entity in a machine that is a ‘soul' is not
only mistake in category or grammar, but also a mistake in how
ordinary people go about searching for their soul.
A computer has intentions in terms of what it is designed for. But
this is a different issue when a human being asks for intentions of
what it is designed for. The two worlds do not necessary relate to
each other even though there is similar usage in understanding the
word ‘intentions' and ‘design.'
***When you are asking for such possibilities in this posting, you are
using your mind to understand possibilities in terms of your own
existence. It certainly has nothing to do with the existence or
intentions of a computer. ***
When talking to a lot of people who do A.I., this is the feeling I got
from them. The model of artificial intelligence is a way of looking
into a mirror and seeing an image of their self. But in the end, the
image of their self in the mirror is only an image. It is certainly
not them.
If you know the difference between a picture and the actual self, then
you are halfway there.
If not, you are just chasing your tail.
To look for yourself, is to for the possibilities and meaning of your
existence.
It is not to look for the meaning of what it is like to be a computer
When a computer scientist asks the question of ‘what does it mean?' Or
‘does it make sense?'
It is certainly not the same usage or intention of when you ask your
minister or priest or whatever spiritual advisor you have in ‘what
does it mean? Or ‘does it make sense?'
Nor it is the same way a child may ask ‘what does it mean?' Or ‘does
it make sense?' in terms of trying to learn a language.
Just keep this in mind. Like I said, I like your post in that it lets
us think in terms of the possibilities of ourselves. But it is not, (I
do not think), the possibilities of a computer.
I have to run to a meeting in 5 minutes. I hope that I made things a
little clear by contextualizing it.
Just my two cents. :-)

We don't implant AI - AI always develops naturally.
If I do this and this I get that.
If I do this and this I get that.
If I do this and this I get that.

Hey I like that.
Don't demean intelligence just because it does not think like you.
What intelligence does it take to create a sunrise?
Stop thinking that rationality and being logical is the only the way to
think.
Instinct/reaction or pure experience and learning........... there are so
many other ways to be intelligent.

For the real amazement, if you wish to be amazed, is this
process: You start out as a single cell derived from the coupling
of a sperm and an egg; this divides in two, then four, then
eight, and so on, and at a certain stage there emerges a single
cell which has as all its progeny the human brain. The mere
existence of such a cell should be one of the great astonishments

This isn't really true. Artificial intelligence tends to be a simulation of
intelligence and doesn't actually have any intelligence to make decisions.
Computer models follow certain prescribed paths to achieve a result. The
more advanced programs are able to come up with new results.

So called "Natural Intelligence" is no different
from so called "Artificial Intelligence".
Intelligence is inteligence, whatever the media.
This isn't really true. Artificial intelligence tends to be a simulation of
intelligence and doesn't actually have any intelligence to make decisions.
Computer models follow certain prescribed paths to achieve a result. The
more advanced programs are able to come up with new results.
How can you say that something which is behaving intelligently is not
intelligent? Just because you know how it works?
Also, don't mix self-awareness with intelligence. Animals are
intelligent. Even very simple ones. AI is catching up to them, at
least.

There is no magic in intelligence, natural or artificial.
Comparing present implementations (natural vs. engineered)
is too restrictive on the effect.
At this point 50 years of engineering is trumped
by 1,000,000,000 years of ad hoc evolution.
They are no different in principle.

Phrase of the week :
For the real amazement, if you wish to be amazed, is this
process: You start out as a single cell derived from the coupling
of a sperm and an egg; this divides in two, then four, then
eight, and so on, and at a certain stage there emerges a single
cell which has as all its progeny the human brain. The mere
existence of such a cell should be one of the great astonishments
of the Earth. People ought to be walking around all day, all
through their waking hours calling to each other in endless
wonderment, talking of nothing except that cell. -- Lewis Thomas (1913-1993)
