Fahrenheit 9/11 Reaches Blockbuster Status |
Fahrenheit 9/11 had already broken two major records on opening
week when it became the highest grossing documentary on opening
weekend and also the incredible record of being the only
documentary to out-sell all the regular movies on opening
weekend. More people went to see Fahrenheit 9/11 on opening
weekend than went to see any other movie!
Now Fahrenheit 9/11 has broken yet another record. In just two
weekends, it has reached blockbuster status taking in over $60
million. This places this film in the big leagues. It's
bringing in so many viewers that theatres have doubled the number
of showings nation-wide. It has already earned more money than
any other documentary ever made and it is projected that
Fahrenheit 9/11 could eventually take in from $100 million to
$150 million, placing it in the super blockbuster category. That
does not include video sales which could conceivably double that
amount.
That a documentary could reach the movie status of a Spiderman or
Lord of the Rings in cinematic revenue was unthinkable before
now. Other documentary makers are now seeing visions of dollar
signs before their eyes and new thought is being given to the
documentary category. Others believe, however, that other
documentaries will not be able to repeat this phenomenon. We are
in a highly charged political race and viewers appear eager for a
change.
The film took top honors at the Cannes Film Festival and now
appears to be well on its way to superstar Academy Award status.
Michael Moore already won an Academy Award for Bowling For
Columbine and a repeat of that for Fahrenheit 9/11 appears a
certainty.

This sounds like the rise of the hit genre of "Survivor" or "American Idol" and
it is very cool to watch one of these new ways of portraying things isn't it?
I was reading another post on this subject and commented about Girls Gone Wild
and how Moore seems to have created, "Violence Gone Wild." THere was one part of
the post that seemed to (grab you);
<quote>
There is one segment in the film that is only 20 seconds long and
yet it has stirred an outrage among the right wing in this
country. It is downtown Baghdad in the few hours before the
attack. Children were playing in the streets, people were in
cafes talking and laughing, Iraqis were going about their
business living their lives. You would think it was small town
America because the scenes are so familiar. People being people,
living their lives. It put a human face on Iraq and on Baghdad.
It wasn't some remote tank in the far distance blowing up. It
was people. People, who in a very short time, would have "shock
and awe" dropped on their heads.
</quote>
Now after "Violence Gone Wild" takes off makin' millions we could start a clone
spinoff called, "Just Before Catastrophe" and find or dramatize everything from
Jews unknowingly walking into the ovens to citizens in Pol Pot's regime lining up
for slaughter. We could make millions and make the sales of personal video cams
skyrocket, trickling down upon us a yellow flow of warmth and happiness!

Not on return on investment.
Nobody expected a documentary to
compete with the best superhero movie
ever made according to Roger Ebert.
Bush is like the monster climbing up
the wall and Michael Moore is like
Spidey, humble and yet a superstar
against the sinister forces facing mankind
when he puts his movie producer uniform on.

Moore himself denies it is a
documentary,
It is propaganda, that Moore calls
"op-ed".
