Laying Hold of Splinters |
"Everything has two handles, the one by which it may be borne, the other by
which it may not. If your brother acts unjustly, do not lay hold of the act by
that handle wherein he acts unjustly, for this is the handle which cannot be
borne; but lay hold of the other, that he is your brother, that he was nurtured
with you, and you will lay hold of the thing by that handle by which it can be
borne." (Epictetus, Enchiridion, XLIII, trans. Goerge Long)
This sounds like a twist of Jesus' "Do not offer to remove the splinter from
the eye of another until you have removed the log from your own eye." In my
mind, this means something along the lines of don't beat a person over the head
on account of his or her being someone who beats others over the head. Or,
don't try to extract a sore tooth with a jack-hammer--on there being a right
way and a wrong way to correct errors. That's the way I've always interpreted
such sayings, maybe I'm way off on that.

Any idea of the age and origin of THAT cliche?
I may use it in a legal filing or oral argument.
"Your Honor, I've been sucking hind teat . . ."

Has to be hundreds of years old. Was a common explanation
for runts. They were pushed to the back where the little extra teats
could be sucked but gave no milk. A good analogy for
trickledown economics.

But since we know you are an idiot, with a different
brand of creationism for sale, and we know which side
you are on, there is a problem with your analysis.
