Much of NY TIMES: $49 Fee Begins in September |
via drudge I see that EDITOR & PUBLISHER reports:
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000921325
My comment: The rags gotta make money.
Ads on the internet are odious, boring, annoying, time-wasting, and so
not enough of the damne readers are paying attention to the damne ads.
Will I pay their $49 ?
I've been known in the past to pay-
subscribe to SLATE, THE NEW REPUBLIC, THE NATION, and thus I suppose I
shall for the NYT, which I consider a good deal for $49.
It's $400 a year for the real paper delivered by mail, or yard- throw
in some Atlanta area.
I don't now pay-subscribe to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, which also has
some very good articles and interesting opinions, usually rightist
slanted of course.
The trend has got to be toward pay subscriptions, as otherwise the
quality publishing companies will become lesser qualoty and/or go out
of bidness.
It'a now generally a blessed free thing, but I know it cannot exist by
those cruddy ads alone, of which I consider are little better than
annoying tv drek/ads.
Sorry, MADison Avenue, but I'm insulted by your crappy pitches, as I
try/would-like-to-be an orthodox CONSUMER REPORTS type, though I've
found flaws about CR too (and have told 'em so).

The NY Times is the only daily paper that has bothered to hire real
science writers.
An article written by a science writer is easy to spot. It answers
more questions than it raises.
I say let's get the science writers in control of the media and
government and toss everyone else.

The economics are dynamically changing, because of this very internet,
as illustrated by this report of the NYT Corporation
"dis-locating"/laying-off/reducing in force/buying-out two percent
(or whatever) of its employees in NYC and Boston.
As general conventional newspaper circulations go down, as the internet
does its increasing internet things, as puter & video games make more
money than ever before, and as the reading of the daily newspapers
seems to be generally declining (at least paid per subscriptions), it's
an ugly trend of bye, bye NYT, as per McLuhan's prediction about ole
fashion "linearism" as archaic.
Will the last non-virtual newspaper readers be in the 21st or 22nd
centuries?
If/when they begin the (as rumored) the pay for internet subscriptions,
I plan to duly pay 'em the $49 or whatever, while I hope it's only $49
for all including Sundays.
They oughta keep it low, so they can get a huge paying internet
readership. I hope many of ye will so subscribe. Let me know if ya
intend to.
Ten years ago they (NYT) started publishing a new newspaper in the
Atlanta area in which I was then residing, THE GWINNETT DAILY (POST
TRIBUNE?) NEWS.
It kinduv looked like USA TODAY, and was about as shallow.
The fine, platinum-standard-but-oligopolistic Atlanta/Cox News & Cable
& Broadcasting Newspapers Corporation(s) competitor subsequently
bought 'em out/bailed 'em out, as the Gwinnett venture was allegedly a
money loser for the NYT Corp.

here's that new, somewhat disturbing report by editor and publisher
magazine:
