Object: "Society Depends Totally on X" where X is my favorite thing
Has anyone else noticed how many different special interest groups
love the rhetoric that goes: "Society depends totally on X," where X
equals the special interest group's forte?
Farmers say that everyone depends on agriculture. (And the labor
unions say, 'We have fed you for ten thousand years,' neatly asserting
their right to back wages earned before they were born...)
Factory workers and managers claim that society is industrial and the
human race depends on industry first and foremost.
Physicians claim that everyone needs health more than anything else.
Merchants and capitalists claim that all human behavior can only
happen if someone is willing to pay for it.
And of course, scientists claim that it is science that built the
entire modern world.
An example is at:
Our modern civilization depends totally for its existence and future
survival on the methods and fruits of science,
It seems to me that modern civilization depends on a *lot* of things,
not just science. Modern civilization would be in deep trouble if all
agriculture failed, or if every factory shut down -- but it might be
able to limp by if agriculture and industry had to revert to a lower
technology level.

A list of criteria for the importance of "interests" might alow us to
determine when a group has a healthy level of interest advocacy and
when they have to much. You make it seem like all interest advocacy is
un-ethicl, can you provide a standard and some criteria which might
justify more un-interest?

I think you have missed a key point (in your statements). Most people
have many interests and may belong to many special interests groups.
These groups are just a way to bring attention to areas you consider
important. I don't showing concern in one area precludes showing
concern in another.

Well, if you are serious and not just spouting talk-show fundatarian/
creationist drivel, you would have to explain how a 'lower technology
level' doesn't constitute science. In other words, the first time
someone made a hole in the ground with a sharp stick and dropped in a
seed, that was agricultural science as well.

Noted, in typical leftist commie inspired fasion, not one mention of
the ONLY entity possible to give all of your examples, including
especially that nauseating regurgitated favourite of the leftist
retards, *society* a meaning in reality, the human individual.
