If we talk about the world, I might say we signify it, but we only signify
the world when we are talking within schools of thought.

Originally there were no schools of thought beyond the received wisdom of
tradition.
Original thinkers did draw on these traditions by sorting out the wheat from
the chaff. The same process continues today as onre paradigm succeeds
another. The historical dominance of a paradigm is not a sure indication of
its approximation to the truth (whatever that might mean).
