TheCompany -most basic unit of modern society |
Hegel predicted that the basic unit of modern society would be the
state, Marx that it would be the commune, Lenin and Hitler that it
would be the political party. Before that, a succession of saints and
sages claimed the same for the parish church, the feudal manor, and the
monarchy. ...they have all been proved wrong. The most important
organization in the world is the company: the basis of the prosperity
of the West and the best hope for the future of the rest of the world.
Indeed, for most of us, the company's only real rival for our time and
energy is the one that is taken for granted - the family.

The company has always been one of the great mysteries of capitalism:
liberals and socialists have never known quite what to think about it.
The company is collectivist and co-operative, based on hierarchy,
bureaucracy and planning rather than individualism, competition and
exchange. Companies appear as little islands of socialism in the market
sea.

I'm sure thats exactly what all the poeple who lost their investment
money to corrupt companies like Enron and WorldCom are thinking right now.

Companies for the most part work in an heirarchical manner, so they
have a tendency to become abusive if there isn't a governing power to
keep them in check.
Some might argue that the capitalist system would take care of that in
itself, and that if the company is mistreating them then they should
just "leave". In a idealized world, maybe, but everyone knows that's
***** for the simple reason that most people have commitments that
they must abide to in their day to day lives. And frankly, some people
have jobs of certain kinds because they don't have a choice in the
manner. (Industry dependent towns, for example.)

And how do those commitments make them stay in an abusive
relationship with a company? Relating to a company that is abusive
doesn't help you take care of your responsibilities. If anything

doesn't help you take care of your responsibilities. If anything
it makes it harder, thus making it easier to leave the relationship.
For one, it costs a lot of money to move. If you were living in a
town, and had been specialized in working in say, the fishing industry,
you can't just prop up and move from the coast and onto another job in
the mountain side. The likelihood is that you won't find a job opening
taylored toward your skill, and even if there is one, there isn't a
guarantee that you will get the job.
Then there's the emotional aspect of it, and the natural tendency for
people tend to develop a affinity for where they live. The place where
you live has all of the things you've grown to love, including family
and friends. Some people don't *want* to move around from job to job,
dragging along their kids and family with them. Most people tend to
think that you at least need some stability in order to raise a family.
You talk as if just picking up your bags and moving out to a completely
foreign place on your own is something incredibly easy. Sure, some
people do, but have you done it yourself? It takes both capital and a
large emotional risk.
What and there aint a road out of those towns?
Not for some. Have you been in some of the ghettos lately? Without
aid, some of these people will never get out. They don't have the job
experience nor education to really get anywhere, nor means of getting
access to those things. Companies know this, so they can lower the
wage to whatever conditions they want and people will still fill in
those positions.
Historically, I'd say that companies have never had trouble finding
low-level workers who'll work for too little pay. Nowadays they go
abroad to find them.
Like I said, that sort of advocation that people don't stay with
abusive relationships might make sense in theory, but the reality is
that people put up with it because they feel they have no other means
of surviving. In fact, the very much is true with people who live with
abusive personal relationships as well.

I'm sure thats exactly what all the poeple who lost their investment

Very few companies survive for hte long haul--they are temporary at
best.
Countries survive, peoples survive-the company is just an adjunct.
Don't give it too much importance--it's only money.
