Six landings, three retroreflectors. Double the number of
footprints and flags; add vehicle tracks and overnight parking
(the E*L*E*C*T*R*I*C lunar rover that required an impromptu
repair on site).

Hey Uncle Al;
What are the chances of a home/school level experiment being able to
detect a bounce off one of those?
Make a hell of a science fair project. :-)

You've got a big mouth, now let's see something of value out of

Apollo 16 was heavy on selenomagnetics and did not leave a

Kolker's case reminds one of the Aesop's fables -"The crow and the
peacock", when his forefathers were thrown out of Eastern Europe and
settled and naturalized in US, the treatment meted out here set a
sadistic and abnormal trait in his genes...the story continues.
The cause of Alan Schwartz's violent behaviour is unknown, perhaps
some childhood bitter experiences or it is the effect of overexposure
to organic chemicals? In a study by Shelia et al "A Retrospective
Cohort Study of Disability Among Chemists," JOURNAL OF OCCUPATIONAL
MEDICINE Vol. 23 (July 1981), pgs. 495-501 (further details are
online), showed that DuPont workers showed a slight increase in
disability claims for mental disorders (neuroses, depression, and
alcoholism), compared to non-chemists; the chemists in DuPont's
chemical research-and-development department had a three-fold increase
in disability claims for mental disorders. This study also revealed an
excessive suicide rate among chemists.
Perhaps very very few chemists tend to have irrational, obssessive,
violent behaviour due to chemicals, what happened to him, is there any
interesting anecdote behind it?

Every month this is posted and every month we go through
the same ritual of mouth frothing ignorance.
I see nothing offensive in Hilal posts, in fact years ago
I used to join with other amateur astronomers to keep track of the
earliest appearance of the crescent moon.
Give it up and use this opportunity to both learn a little
astronomy and a little tolerance at the same time!

Hi Mark,
I think that some of the resentment we see here (and I've contributed
to it in spades in earlier posts) is the same kind of resentment that
we feel when:
1. Catholics tell the rest of the world they are evil for not
believing in the infallibility of the Pope and that birth control is a
Mortal Sin and the same as first degree murder.
2. Jehovah's Witnesses ring the door bell every darn week even after
we let the house watch dog bark at them at close range.
3. Young missionaries on their bikes with the short sleaved white
shirts, ties and dark pants and their book of ( ) try save us
from ourselves.
Etc. with no possible end.....
Top that off with the fact that on September 12, 2001, we found out
there were "tolerant" muslims who loved their brother Christians and
Jews and who would never do anything in the least bit offensive toward
their "infidel" fellow human beings.
No one likes "in your face believers" religious or not. God knows, I
don't care if my fellow man believes that God is the bloody Easter
Bunny but when some of his fellow believers start blowing stuff up
because other people laugh at the Easter Bunny it gets harder to be
nice.
Mohib Durani is a poor demented believer. He may be totally harmless.
Then again his postings may be like the radio message circa June 6,
1944 "The clouds roll on the hill" which translated to "blow up the RR
bridge leading to Dog Green Sector, Omaha Beach". My guess is he is a
harmless pain in the butt but his actions tend to gather other angry
elements of more extreme views.
I doubt that a Munich type Beer Hall or a Japanese Tea Garden would
have been a really great bumpiness plan in 9143 San Diego. It would
have been insensative in the extreme. It would have been more than in
"bad taste". A North Korean fast food shop would have been a big "NO"
in South Korea in 1952.
I no longer beat on old Mohib, because it seems to do no good. I have
already sent messages to various US GOV agencies suggesting they check
him out. Since he is still at it, I figure he is either under
surveillance or he is harmless or the Gov has not got to him yet.
Either way, Uncle Al seems to even say things I am afraid to put into
print.
Sincerely,
Your Friend,
Jim Klein

I wouldn't read anything sinister into his posts. Muslims worldwide use the
info for some of their religious observances, much like Jews use the
official time of sunset (specially on Fridays) for theirs.

So could any other USENET poster, period. Given the paranoia
afoot these days, a non-Muslim radical would likely find this
type of posting a good ruse, putting the first suspicion on some
group of Islamic people.
That said, I fully agree that these postings are a great
service to Muslims, and as noted, also to many astronomers.

The US Government? Man, Paranoia seems to have no limits. Contacting
his ISP for the crossposting, maybe, but the feds?
Dr.Durrani provides a very useful service to astronomers and follows a
centuries-old tradition among arab scientists.
Are you going to rename Aldebarran "freedom star" now? ; )
Jim, maybe you should try and catch a first crescent on some clear
night. You'll see that there is a more universal dimension to Islam in
the contemplation of beauty and the search for inner peace.

Mark, I to use the post just to see what the first point in time I can see
the moon, and I also noted that this month the post was late getting into my
