25% OF TOYOTA'S U.S. SALES WILL BE HYBRIDS |
25% of Toyota's U.S. sales will be hybrids
By James Treece
Automotive News
Wednesday, August 3, 2005
Traverse City, Mich. - One-quarter of Toyota Motor
Corp.'s U.S. sales by the end of the decade will be
hybrid vehicles, Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor
Sales U.S.A. Inc., said Wednesday at the Management
Briefing Seminars.
Toyota has 10 hybrid vehicles under development for
global markets, in addition to the ones it already has
launched, Press said. Those will go on sale between now
and the end of the decade, he said.
Hybrids could account for "10, 12 or 15 percent" of
industry-wide sales by the end of the decade, he said.
Press added that he could not be specific about the
percentage because he doesn't know what other automakers
have planned.
However, "the demand will be there," Press said.
Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe has set a new goal of
1 million hybrid sales a year globally early next decade.
"At our current rate of sales, that's about 600,000
hybrids in the U.S.," Press said. "To achieve that goal,
we will have to look at offering hybrid power systems in
virtually all of our vehicles, including trucks."
Toyota is studying development of hybrid-powered pickups,
he said. Toyota engineers in Japan have said that
development of hybrid pickups is lagging that of other
vehicles.
Also, Press said it's possible that future hybrid owners
may be able to choose whether they want to see improved
mileage or performance from a hybrid powertrain by
pushing a button on the instrument panel.

Good to see. More production means less expensive.
We bought our last car from Toyota and are very happy
with it. We wanted to go hybrid, but it was 5k out of our
price range.

I think there is a market for hybrids. Of course you
aren't going to drag your boat/snowmobile/dirt bike
behind one but for regular commuting this new technology
might sell. If they can keep the price in line and make
sure that dealerships are equiped to fix the things when
they break they could catch on. Some of them are butt-
ugly but Ford has an mini-SUV that doesn't look too bad.

Let's hear it for the "market economy."
Personally, the Toyota I drive is their full sized pickup
truck, the Tundra.
If people want a hybrid and are willing to pay the higher
price, that is wonderful. If they want a bio-fueled
diesel, that is also great. If they want a natural gas
fired car, cool. If they want a hydrogen car super.
Everyone in a market economy can buy what they want. I
applaud Toyota for meeting market demand.

OK, I'm not a tech wiz, but I do know a little about
mechanics. If the hybrid power trains already exist then
all you have to do is make sure the trucks are built to
accept them, right? How much "development" above that do
you need?

Ding! We have a winner. Just add on "and if they want
none of the above, but would prefer a large truck or
whatever, that is also great, being their choice" and I
think that should (not will, but should) squelch the
endless hybrid wars here :)

people of average means can only afford reasonably priced
vehicles......so I think Hybrids will be the bastion of
the rich......
we'll have better more fuel efficient vehicles by then,
but they'll be gas powered and able to be purchased by
the average driver....

I'm glad you're happy with it. I'll stick with my 2 Jeep
4.0 straight sixes. Tried and true.
