And then a miracle happened |
I'd like to find a copy of the well-known cartoon which shows a
blackboard full of mathematics, and at the bottom it says "And then a
miracle happened".
Does anyone know where I can find it--either on the web or in its
original publication which I can find in a library?

It's still my all-time favorite...only I thought the miracle
comment was in the _middle_. That made even funnier to me
because it's very similar to developing operating systems.
One our bit gods used to say, "A small matter of programming."

In my undergrad days, if we got stuck in the middle of a proof/solution but
we knew what the result of the next step SHOULD be, we would insert the line
....
"By Spontaneous Induction"
.... it actually worked on occasion :-)

I used to have a strip cartoon you'd like:
Frame 1: Stereotypical scientist (white coat etc.) at board with
incomprehensible mathematical gibberish. Over his head a thinks-bubble
containing just "?"
Frame 2: Ditto, but the bubble now contains "!"
Frame 3: Scientist typing at a computer. The same mathematical gibberish
on its screen.
Frame 4: Scientist, computer etc. Computer screen simply shows a large
"?"

You can find this one and many more like it in "What's So Funny about

Jeezus Fraz', you can't even tell a good joke right. It goes "He
*WORKED* it out with a pencil."
Reminds me of a guy I worked with during the 1st Gulf war in '91.
He could ruin just about any joke. At that time there was a derogotory
Polish joke going around which, when told properly, came out this way:
"Did you hear that Poland sent 10,000 troops to the Gulf? Yeah, the
Mexicans didn't know what to do with them all."
Ok, so this guy was telling me this joke, only he lost complete
track of it and uttered:
"You hear that Poland sent 10,000 troops to Saudi Arabia? The
Mexicans..."
