If the planets orbit the Sun, then ordering the planets in terms of
the Sun at the center - and ignoring the Moon, as the Moon orbits the
Earth - is necessary to show how the planets orbit the Sun. Explaining
the Solar System as it actually is cannot be justly termed heresy.
The ancients of course knew the period of time the planets took to
move through the constellations, and could order the planets in terms
of that. Since Mercury and Venus move with the Sun, the time they take
to move from one side of the Sun to the other would instead be used to
break the tie. Some ancient Greeks indeed considered a heliocentric
solar system, but those of the mediaeval period in which Copernicus
lived had rejected this.
That the planets should be ordered to suit astrological tradition,
instead of the actual order in which they stand from the Sun which
they orbit constitutes confusion.
