children of a lesser god |
A question for the hard core pagans here - what do you do
if your kids get religion? Presumably, in a very big way....

You allow them to explore it-secure in the knowledge that they will come to
the same conclusion you did.You must allow your children to make their own
choices.Chances are their religious curiosity is rebellion against your
atheism. Are you suggesting that for the sake of our children atheists
should pretend to be religious?

My wife has children I haven't. They are supposed to be Buddhists, but
I wonder if they have any clue about the essence of th philosphy!
As I do not speakThai properly, and their English is also poor we have
not been able to address the subject.
My wife knowns I am an atheist, but with some respect for Buddha's
teachings (and those of Jesus).
I told her the difference.
Buddha believed in reincarnation
Jesus believed in heaven
Peter believes neither
Buddha taught the people they do not need to take
Jesus taught the people they need to give.
Peter believes both
I thinks my wife is satisfied with my explanation.
But she still feels more happy when I tell her that should
reincarnation occur, I too would like to marry her once more:-)

My "kids" already have religion - they all think they're gods. Of
course, the ancient Egyptians thought cats were gods, and I suppose
the cats have never forgotten it, but sheesh. They wake me up in the
night and require me to worship them with food and petting. Being the
only mere mortal in my household is a job of work.

Which ain't working too well. The dog has once again taken over the couch
and now occasionally sleeps in our bed. Too bad she snores.
However, friends of ours say that Ginger's very smart, well-behaved and
doing great for her age. As she's my first puppy, I don't have anything to
compare her to. I guess I'm just used to the simplicity of cats. To me,
dogs are more complicated. For instance, the way Ginger looks at you like
she's thinking about something. Those expressive eyes. WHAT DOES SHE WANT
FROM ME?!?!

Oh, having been around dogs most of my life, I can assure you, the puppy
will worship you.
In fact, often, I could really, really do without all the adoration and
flat *cannot* imagine any being wanting billions of people adoring them
for all eternity.
I can just imagine "god" snapping after about a thousand years of all
those worshipers following him everywhere, adoring him non-stop, and
blowing up heaven so he can get a moment of peace...

Let's say a person notices something they don't understand. They have
two options: to stay ignorant, or to try to understand the event. The
first option yields animals. Only in allowing our curiosity to
motivate us to seek understanding do we become human.
Assuming we are trying to understand, we again have two options: to
ask around or to investigate for ourselves. The first option leads us
to answers someone else has come up with and passed along to us either
verbally (legends) or in writing (scripture). So we get mythology and
scripture. Both are unjustifiable reliance upon authority. Since
there is comfort in sharing an idea with another (we *are* basically
social animals), there is little incentive to go beyond an accepted
answer, no matter how unsatisfactory it is.
The option to investigate for ourselves teaches us to seek answers
from the universe, and has led to experimental science and the
scientific method. Unsatisfactory answers only raise further
questions.
"Getting religion" for someone who has been raised with the scientific
method of truth-seeking is like forgetting how to read.

Pagans already have religion so, presumably, your question must be
about children who get a _different_ religion.
I am an atheist, so maybe you don't want my answer. I have brought my
children up to think for themselves so it is very unlikely that they
would ever fall for a religious scam.

So how many pagans, hardcore or otherwise, do you think you'll find in
an atheist newsgroup, Skippy?

One fine day in alt.atheism, RichD <r_delaney2001@yahoo.com> bloodied us up
with this:
A question for the hard core pagans here - what do you do
if your kids get religion? Presumably, in a very big way....
What pagans do you expect to find in an atheist newsgroup, moron?

ahahahaha... "Baker?", yeah, right!.. the phony pseudo-Baker
who just evoked Sid Snead's axiom which says:
::S:: "I am sorry to hear that John Baker is a Jew. I enjoy the
::S:: clarity of his writing, but will now have to treat his opinions
::S:: as suspect, since, being a Jew, he believes that what is

AHAHAHA... So, phony "'Baker" what in your Jewish intellect
was it that cranked you to express yourself by/with/thru your
highly intellectual 1-liner and made you appear to be exactly
like your brother-in-ilk here:
< http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2O9W3UsdRyM >
Why do you not object to Kolker's "brainy" Jewish behavior?
Your silence about that implies that you think & are like him.
Thanks for the laughs you cultured Dreidel "Baker"... ahaha...

There are very few (current) pagans here. Most seem to be christian or
atheist.
Pagans just have different ods from the ones you believe in.
The definition of pagan is essentially somebody who does not believe in the
definers gods but do believe in theirs.

Okay, let us examine your choice of newsgroups to post this to.
alt.atheism: Not known for having large numbers of practicing pagans.
In fact, atheists tend to view pagans pretty much like they do all
religions. Conclusion, dumb post.
sci.skeptic: Pretty much a ditto from above. Conclusion, dumb post.
sci.physics: You must be lost if you think large numbers of pagans
congregate in a physics news group. Conclusion, dumb post.
Perhaps you'd better lookup the word pagan in your dictionary. Then
perhaps you might want to post this ridiculous question to a pagan
newsgroup.
Thanks and have a nice day.
