Object: Cranks in USC and U. Chicago

From Osher Doctorow

Professor Ronald E. Bruck of USC and Mme. Whats-her-name of Chicago
have just posted an in-group "crank" 2-person posting on sci.physics.
Bruck obtained his Ph.D. from U. Chicago in mathematics and specializes
in functional analysis, and apparently his only recent contribution to
sci.physics is to criticize sci.physics as containing cranks, to which
Mme. Whats-her-Chicago replied that there are more cranks here than on
sci.math. Mme. has as far as I can see an almost uninterrupted record
of criticizing other people without proposing Creative threads of her
own on sci.physics. I suppose that they represent the "purification"
school of the internet and presumably off-internet too, according to
which it is more important to criticize the Nonconformists than the
Conformists, just as it is supposedly more important to publish lists
of Cranks than lists of Nonconformists who succeeded despite
Departmental Fossilization and of whom Pierre De Fermat, Socrates, Lord
Francis Bacon, Saint Thomas More, Sir Isaac Newton, Beethoven, Mozart,
and quite a few other people are excellent examples.
I was tempted to write Brook instead of Bruck, but I suppose that we
must retain the languages of the Founding Fathers :>) By the way, USC
isn't on my list of 1000 best USA universities in mathematics or
physics. But maybe if they start thinking positively, they can
improve.

Ah, now Eric Gisse of Alaska (the "Teamster State") has joined the two
aforementioned on their thread with bemoanings of lack of abilities on
sci.physics. Why doesn't he clean his own house (State) before trying
to clean up others' ?
The general idiotic argument of the Trolls and Anti-Crank and Anti-Spam
crowd (the first and third respectively tend to be from invalid.com and
NoSpam.com type sites) would be laughable to most people familiar with
Statistics. They are more interested in rejecting a "bad" argument
than in accepting a "good" argument. That's an almost sure giveaway
for Bureaucrats, especially in Academia, Government, and Big
Corporations and Politics. To retain their excessive
Power-Materialism and Greed-Materialism, they have to spend most of
their time rejecting Nonconformists to their own Bureaucratic rules
than accepting Nonconformists. If you haven't seen the movie Amadeus
in this regard, now would be a good time to rent or buy the DVD.

Ooh, I see the difference now: your cranks are more vicious :-)
I really shouldn't yank his chain like that. But I'll just quote a
former dean, on why he had authorized the purchase of a bullet-proof
vest for a chairman who had been threatened by a graduate student:
approximately 20% of the population is paranoid; [personally I think
that's high]; there are 25000 students walking around campus; hence,
there are 5000 paranoids walking around campus. A scary thought.
Now, I really AM going to desist, because I've wasted enough bandwith
on sci.physics. I will make _no further replies_. But I do
commiserate with you guys. I think maybe sci.physics DOES have
sci.math beat, in the--er--quality of your cranks.
