Object: Cricial Verification of the Theory of Relativity
Consider the scenario discussed on pp. 3-4 in
http://www.courses.fas.harvard.edu/~phys16/Textbook/ch13.pdf
Since "we can always pick a new instantaneous rest frame of the
rocket", let us pick one different from S, the inertial frame S'. In S'
the receiver, which has just received the pulse and has a speed v
relative to S, is momentarily at rest.
Relative to S', both S and the light source at the moment of emitting
the pulse (only one pulse is emitted) have a speed v. In other words, a
light source with speed v (relative to S') emits a single flash of
light towards the receiver which is momentarily at rest in S' at the
moment of receiving the light.
What is the relative speed of the pulse, one one hand, and S' and the
accelerated receiver (observer), on the other, at the moment of
receiving the light? Does this relative speed depend on the speed v of
the light source? Two quotations by Einstein:
http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/einstein/specrel/www/
"... light is always propagated in empty space with a definite velocity
c which is independent of the state of motion of the emitting body."
http://www.ekkehard-friebe.de/wallace.htm ch. 4
"If the speed of light is the least bit affected by the speed of the
light source, then my whole theory of relativity and theory of gravity
is false."
The following answer by a relativity activist essentially resolves the
problem:
Tom Roberts wrote in sci.physics.relativity:

Pentcho Valev wrote:

CAN THE SPEED OF LIGHT EXCEED 300000 km/s IN A GRAVITATIONAL FIELD?

Sure, depending on the physical conditions of the measurement. It can
also be less than "300000 km/s" (by which I assume you really mean the
standard value for c). And this can happen even for an accelerated
observer in a region without any significant gravitation (e.g. in
Minkowski spacetime).

He's been deified by his faithful flock that do not like blasphemy from

Alright Juan Valdez, time to lay off those coffee beans. You got us!
Albert and I thought it would make a funny practical joke, he swiped it
off of one of the loons trying to patent the crazy idea. Elvis and I
have spent day and night since then fabricating and modifying evidence
to make it the one of the most thoroughly tested and confirmed theories
in science.
I think I speak for everyone: You enlightened us, go away!
