Object: Day dreaming - Can we dig a well in the Gobi area and store snow water?
I read that some Chinese hot/dry village farmers dig water reserviors
indoors and store snow
in winter. These snow will melt and become drinking water for the year. I am
wondering
whether it work to dig huge wells and store large quantities of snow, then
use the same
water to irrigate the land?
What is the most economical method of building durable water tanks of large
capacity?
These water tanks require minimizing water loss by precipitaion also.

It would likely have to be boiled before use. If the tank ever
gets contaminated...

I think you mean "evaporation"...

Yeah. Evaporation.
I need an idea of making a water tank most economically since
the farmers are not rich.

If contamination is an issue check out the use of oat straw. I read
somewhere that a bale of oat straw thrown into a pond will clean the water
and keep it free of infection - it may not make it drinkable but it would
probably be ok for irrigation

When I was a kid, way back in the 30s, on a farm in western
Oklahoma, we used a rain cistern for our household water. This
was a 20 some feet deep by 8 feet diameter hole in the ground,
sealed by a troweled on concrete mix. The rain water from the
house roof was collected by rain gutters, then filtered through a
sand/gravel trash filter and finally through active charcoal. The
output water looked a bit brown because of stain from the cedar
roof shingles, but it tasted very good, and was exceptionally
good for things like shampooing or washing clothes. It was of
nearly zero hardness, so the soap would lather up abundantly.

Google "cistern".
They have been in use in Jordan for about 3000 years:

Economically:
(1) dig a hole
(2) cover it
The rest is engineering refinements.

In some of the drier parts of the US they've been experimenting, or at
least researching the idea of, storing water. Piles of snow covered with
straw, or forcing water under pressure into well holes for later
extraction. Big projects, often with problems like algae growth on the
walls of a well hole reducing the porosity and ability to force water
into the rock.
I read about it in a Science News magazine.

Uncle Al read that the same Chinese bury unwanted children in the
stored snow, thereby having meat and soup for the year. One presumes
the Chinese are sufficiently advanced that storage of water in glazed
fired ceramic containers, metal containers, or wooden barrels is
available in 2005 AD.
