Discovery of Neutrino Oscillation, Mass Upends Standard Model of Fundamental Forces and Particles |
That's GREAT!
(from here: http://www.physorg.com/news346.html)
A team of nearly 100 physicists from around the world have achieved
results verifying that the elementary particle known as the neutrino
exhibits a distinctive pattern of oscillation. This discovery shows
that it is likely that the Standard Model, proposed in the 1970s to
describe the fundamental forces and particles that make up all matter,
is incomplete. The findings provide the needed confirmation to their
previous discovery of neutrino oscillation and give the most precise
measurement yet of neutrino mass.

Last I heard there were something like 25-35 "fundamental" constants
in the Standard Model. I don't personally see how educated people
could ever believe that this was the end-all and be-all of physics. 3
families of particles and 30 constants I mean give me a break. This is
crying out for a deeper understanding and an elimination of most of
these constants. IMO, Physics won't be finished until we have a formula
(with hopefully 1 or fewer fundamental constants) that predicts particle
masses and the other "fundamental" constants.

Gosh, I wonder why no one else ever thought of that. Oh wait, they did.
