Object: Do we know if gravity pushes or pulls?
If I were to hold a baseball ten feet from the ground then release it.
Is the baseball being pulled in toward the Earth or pushed toward the
Earth? I always assumed that the Earth would pull the ball toward
itself. I'm not an expert in physics though, and I can't think of any
conclusive proof that matter pulls itself together. So I wonder is
there an outside force which pushes matter together or is matter
attracted to itself or both or something more abstract that I haven't
even considered? I hope that an expert physicist will take the time to
answer my question. I would really appreciate it. My curiosty is
overwhelming. Thanks.

Yes. The best description of gravity we have is general relativity.
In this, the effects of gravity are due to the curvature of spacetime
by matter and energy.

In this, the effects of gravity are due to the curvature of spacetime
by matter and energy.

The difference is; if the matter pulls independently of any
other factors, i.e. if gravity is an intrinsic quantity of
mass, then the more mass, the more gravity until
you arrive at paradoxical quixotical fantastic beasts like
Black Holes; but if matter is pushed together
by an all-pervasive current, then gravity can only
be as powerful as the current and you don't end up
with mythical paradoxical monsters in your otherwise
civilized little theories.

No, you are wrong. You have the same problems unless you postulate that
the current has a mean free path after which it deteriorates.
Otherwise, there is no difference.
of course, when you start postulating such things the sh..starts
hitting the fan.

Gravity can attract over distance. Gravity can push inward creating
great pressure to create stars(fusion) Gravity can create an explosion
,and gravity can create an implosion. Gravity can hold galaxies
together(attraction) Gravity can create universe's accelerating
expansion. All this is the reasons for my concave,convex curving
of space theory. Kind of tricky but so is gravity. Bert

The atom pushes its self down the energy slope.
all its parts change to eliptical obits then the center of mass and the
center of G is not at the same point.
F is the distance from the center of mass to the center of gravity.
Gravity is a slope to less energy.
bent space is an energy gradiant.

science.

As far as my understanding (which admittedly, may be naive) it works
like this:
Classicly speaking gravity is seen as a force at a distance. As
someone else here correctly mentioned things are pulled toward each
other.
In terms of what I get out of relativity things are neither pulling nor
pushing each other. Although it is true that all things
gravitationally influence all other things.
What's "really" happening here is that the presence of mass warps or
curves the local geometry of space time. Things still want to go in a
"straight" line though. It's just that the meaning of straight is
dictated by the track. A roller coaster may not go just anyway it
pleases.
So things are really in a perpetual state of falling in such a way that
the shortest physical distance is traversed in the maximum amount of
time. On Earth that path is apparently a parabolic deviation (based on
acceleration, i.e. throwing a base ball as opposed to dropping it
straight down.) from a stright line to the center of the planet.
At least that's what I get out of my learning so far.

The answer is neither... it's the intrinsic momentum of spacetime.
Today's gravity is a remnant of a once denser ( dissipating ) universe.
Like life, fields ( gravitational, electro-magnetic and relativistic-quantum )
have NegEntropy ( i.e. they can " ignite ", lowering Gibbs_Free_Energy ).
NegEntropy is a Local/Temporary reversal of entropy ( i.e. an open system ),
like winning the jackpot in a virtual casino
( where the house always wins in the end ).
