Thanks, it has been forwarded to some folks as well because we are all
wondering what E8 is exactly and why we should care. The UAF physics
department is a bit more down to Earth, if you will.

e8 x e8 was the culmination of the g.u.t. search in string theory
su1 gave electromagnetism
su2 x su1 gave electroweak
su3 x su2 x su1 gave the standard model
these are the gauge groups of the dynamics
the heterotic string allows two possible gauge groups
after the restrictions of anomaly cancellation
so(32) and e8 x e8
the e8 x e8 is the one that can encompass the standard model nicely
