The climate will change, I suspect, when universities stop treating
students like garbage:

The question is... will it ever happen?

More warnings over decline in science students
Staff and agencies
Thursday October 20, 2005
The decline in applications for science courses at British universities
is a "huge worry" which could have a knock-on effect on the UK's future
economic success, MPs were warned yesterday.
The chief executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for
England, Sir Howard Newby, said that applications for degree courses in
chemistry, physics, mathematics and engineering had fallen by as much
as 30% in recent years, with 10 universities closing chemistry
departments for lack of demand.
I guess we're entering the post-Einstein era.

Actually, in the Global Brain scenario, people need know only very
little as long as they have the ability and means of worldwide
point-to-point communication, sending messages around the globe
isomorphically to the way messages are transmitted within the human
brain.
Oh Brave, New World.
