Egg-shaped Universe? Probably Not |
Egg-shaped Universe? Probably Not
http://www.astro.ucla.edu/~wright/cosmolog.htm#News
"30 Sep 2006 - The Los Angeles Times has a story today about the
paper* that suggests the Universe might be egg-shaped, and that
this might explain the low quadrupole seen in the WMAP (and COBE
DMR) CMB anisotropy maps. This was a silly paper and I said as
much to the reporter John Johnson. Adding an additional
quadrupole from the ellipsoidal Universe will make the
probability of the low observed quadrupole even smaller, unless
there is a reason that the quadrupole from the ellipticity will
be equal and nearly opposite to the quadrupole from inflation.
No such reason is given in this paper. Unfortunately the
referees for the Physical Review Letters missed this, and the
American Institute of Physics issued a press release
(subscription) about the paper".

Sam, these are all real cosmological cob-webs in the brains of
these egg-heads. But give'm some slack for they've gotta make a
living too. To say that the infinite cosmos has a shape is irrational
in the first place, ...and if they use the term "universe" to describe
the visible portion of it then depending on the chosen magnification/
resolution it can assume any type of geometry/topology, because
the limit of distance in any given direction is determined of how
much matter does lay the line of sight.

I enjoy the speculation being constrained by the evidence! :-)

absolutely, Sam... and tomorrow we can enjoy cajoling over it,
unconstrained, if the evidence shown is worth speculating about.
ahahaha... ahahanson

Sam The universe using good science tells me the best shape to visualize
the universe is "saddle shaped" Flat no good Sphere better than flat
and good in the first few billion years of the BB,but time has changed
it to saddle shape.saddle has "negative curve",and I like that Bert

We already have a great deal of data that indicates, on the large
scale, that the universe is flat, Herb. Do you not like empirical
data contradicting what you want the universe to be?

the curvature of spacetime is a property of the young universe.
BH in the centers of quasars and galaxies keeps it that way.
there will be a time (but it will take almost forever) when the
universe
will become a huge flat space frozen in time. spiral structures
will disapeare.

A universe curved like a sphere would be finite; a universe curved like
a saddle would be infinite. It's not possible to go from one to the
other without an infinite amount of expansion.

Jim Good thinking infinite room to expand is the way the universe has
to go. Reality is it could be inflating(expanding) faster than the speed
of light. Bert
