about four years. This paper is widely available in English. You can
find a copy beginning on page 99 of the Dover book 'The Principle of
Relativity.' You will find in section 3 of that paper, Einstein's
derivation of the (variable) speed of light in a gravitational
potential, eqn (3). The result is, c' = c0 ( 1 + V / c^2 ) where V is
the gravitational potential relative to the point where the speed of
light c0 is measured."
Absolutely true indeed. Since the gravitational redshift factor 1+V/c^2
is obviously a corollary of Einstein's variable-speed-of-light
equation, Einsteinans will state clearly one day:
The gravitational redshift is due to the variability of the speed of
light in a gravitational field, not to the absurd gravitational time
dilation as we used to teach.

Actually, it demonstrated a *redshift*. GR predicted a
value consistent with that redshift (at least, AFAIK).
I've fiddled a little with the problem, and AIUI if one
postulates that a piece of light is a ball initially moving
at velocity c, using Newtonian theories, one gets twice the
redshift, which is not consistent with the observed data (the
approximate amount being (1 + gh/c^2), where g is local
gravitational acceleration and h the height).
Darned good result for science but not absolute proof, of course.
