Einstein's Hypnotists Really Really Know No Limits |
http://www.abc.net.au/rn/science/ss/stories/s1551028.htm :
Jo=E3o Magueijo: Essentially, we questioned the constancy of the speed
of light, which is radical in the sense that it's the pillar of
physics. Since Einstein proposed the theory of relativity every theory
in physics is based on the speed of light not changing. We did exactly
that: we made it change in our theory. It was mainly a theory, now it
might be a bit more than that, but it still is a theory without
complete vindication from experiment.
Robyn Williams: Changed by much?
Jo=E3o Magueijo: The idea was that you would put many, many more zeros
in front of it, right at the beginning, at the Big Bang, the moment of
creation of the Universe. By very, very little, if you're talking in
recent times - recent times in cosmology means the last 10 billion
years, OK, so it's kind of, everything is relative. But you know,
we're talking about very small variations in recent times.
..=2E....................................
Robyn Williams: Will it do much damage to the theory of relativity?
Jo=E3o Magueijo: Oh, it depends what you mean by damage. I mean, this
thing obviously incorporates the previous theory as a limit, so you can
never completely say it's completely wrong, it's just generalising.
What we're doing is generalising old work.
Robyn Williams: Otherwise you'd be out of work, wouldn't you?
Jo=E3o Magueijo: Yes, that's right.=20

Magueijo and Lee Smolin were innovative regarding the speed of light,
but Smolin was captured by the "discrete universe" Loop Quantum Gravity
program which is even worse than Superstring/Brane theory in its
over-complication and in the case of LQG "divorce from Reality". Not
everybody who supports varying c or unbounded c is necessarily a
Creative Genius, though some are Ingenious Imitators and others have
one foot in Creative Genius and one foot in Ingenious Imitation.
Magueijo's idea of discovery in physics seems to be "emotionality"
which in his writings and interviews is largely negative.
In my opinion, discovery by "negative emotions" doesn't work except
maybe once in a lifetime, and even that once is debateable - it's more
likely to be the motivation of self-expression for the first time in
one's life that's operating. But there is hope at least for Ingenious
Imitators - it's a phase that Creative Geniuses also pass through,
though most Ingenious Imitators either stay that way or regress to
Mediocrity arguably. The "chemistry" to advance to Creative Genius has
to do with replacing emotionality with Reality-orientation including a
balance between abstract and concrete and the attainment of tranquility
at a deep level. I don't think that profanity helps tranquility,
incidentally, but just keeps the Ingenious Imitators going around in a
self-regurgitating loop.
