If we believe the mystics then we will say that one has to discover this at
a higher level of consciousness and can do so while living, in meditation.

I am an identical twin, so I only have .5 souls. And when I get myself
cloned (from a cell being 10^-8 of me) , poor old clone will only have
..5 x 10^-8 of a soul (sob, sob)

Interesting. I once knew of someone else that started talking about
her near death experience, and she talked about it being something
horrible. How she had the sensation of falling and of pain, and how
she was glad that she was no longer there.
I didn't get up the gumption to ask her after that, wheather she
thought that the experience may have either been connected with the
result of anything she may have done earlier, or wheather she thought
that it was a complete hallucination without much meaning.
Or for that matter, wheather her near death experience may have aided
or harmed her later recovery.
What was your near death experience like?
