This is a continuation of last week's edition. It is the research
product of
Sheikh Sedia Ceesay, Assistant Principal of Tallinding Islamic Union.
This research was done on female circumcision in Islam and what doctors
say
about it.
Dr Muhammad Ali Al-Barri, the medical adviser in king Fahd Hospital for
medical research in Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia wrote in his
report to the Muslim World League in Mecca that, female circumcision
causes
no significant harm as mentioned by some doctors. However, harm may
occur if
the equipment used are not sterilised or the cut was very deep thus
deviating from Prophet Muhammad's advice to Oummou Attiyah.
Secondly, Professor TE Wiswell, the chairman of child ward in
Washington
Military Hospital once wrote in a magazine in March 1990 that he was
one of
the forefront enemies of the female circumcision.
"Since 1975, I put in great efforts of reducing the practice but I
realised
in the early eighties that scientific researches pointed out that there
is
an increase of urinary track infections among the children who are not
circumcised even though I did not approve the routine practice of
female
circumcision. But after some thorough scrutiny of the results and
facts, the
case studies and researches that were published in medical magazines
and
papers in America, I became one of those who propaganda for the
exercise to
be practiced on every American child."
Lancet, the British magazine issued in 1989 mentioned that the
circumcision
of children at their early ages could reduce the percentage of urinary
track
infection among children up to 90%.
Doctor Hisan Shamushi Bassa from Great British, now a military medical
adviser in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said that doctors who campaigned
against female circumcision are telling lies of what they are saying
about
it.
Muhammad Hassan Hantawy, a medical professor in Ain Shams anniversary,
Cairo, Egypt and colleagues said in the medical Islamic congress on
Shari
and the modern medicine which was held between 2nd to 5th February 1987
that
some of the harmful effects that occur due to circumcision happened
simply
because circumcisers did not adhere to the Prophet's advice.
On the 8th of March 1988, the medical association of California agreed
that
the circumcision of a child is an effective way towards their health.
The logical evidence of female circumcision
If female circumcision were not permitted in Islam, Prophet Muhammad
(SAW)
would have condemned it straight away because he never compromised
religious
teachings. That is to say, if the practice were prohibited, he would
have
condemned it just as he did in the case of polytheism. He did not talk
out
of his desire - his talks were destined by Allah, as stated in the
Quran.
That is why he never kept quite on things that will be a burden on
Muslims
or human race at large.
Scholars of the Islamic world all agreed that female circumcision is a
Sunnah and is an honour, generosity, respect and a measure of control
of
their sexual desire for men.
Additionally, history has shown that the practice was going on long ago
and
that no harm has been attributed to it.
Infact Ummul Atiyyah and Ummul Habibah were female circumcisers during
the
lifetime of prophet (SAW). They used to circumcise the wives and
daughters
of the companions of the prophet in those days.
Researches have shown that circumcised women can control their sexual
desires than the uncircumcised ones. Therefore this will go along in
preventing adultery and prostitution in our Islamic society. Something
can
easily get out of a hole that is said to free than the one, which has
obstacles.
The prophet (SAW) described female circumcision as a profound honour
and
respect for women. This honour and respect should be maintained rather
than
to stopping it.
Not a single text from the holy Quran and hadith prohibits the
practice.
