Object: Fluorescent ligt responds to sound
Hi,
a friend of mine owns a fluorescent light connected to his computer
case. When in the off position it will still light up when playing bass
music, or talking loudly in the room, i.e. respond to sound vibrations.
Tapping the lamp results in the same effect. The effect is only there
when the lamp is connected to power (but in the "off" position).
Any idea on what causes this? I pondered a stray loose connection or
something, but an identical brand/model lamp I saw elsewhere produces
the same effect...
Thanks!
Bart

Any strong electric field will light up a fluorescent tube.

Some fluorescent lights don't actually remove power when switched "off".
They simply interrupt the current while the off button is pushed, and the
lamp goes out. It then needs- usually!- for the "on" button to be pushed
to energize filaments that get the lamp started. Once the lamp is started
and the on button is released, the filaments are de-energized, but the lamp
stays on.
In this type of lamp, outside disturbances can cause the lamp to start,
resulting in the sort of effects you've described. I once had one like
that. You could turn it on by running your hand over the shade quickly.

It's in fact a sound-light model (common, have one)
