Object: Fun With Ultraviolet
My child found an ultraviolet or black lamp bulb in my old junk. What is there
that I can use to show with it? Something in stamps or paper money or something
in common use? I'd like to bring some objects into the room, shut off regular
light and turn on ultraviolet to show its use. Thanks.

Almost an white fabric contains brighteners that will glow under UV.
And each denomination of US money greater than $1 has a plastic ID
strip embedded in it. Different colors for different denominations,
all visible under UV.

Credit cards, passports, similar documents that need security measures.

Tonic water has 100 ppm quinine in it, fluoresces like mad. Good for
malaria,
brings up a story about mad dogs, Englishmen, the noon-day sun,
quinine,
malaria, Colonial India, and the invention of the Gin and Tonic.
Also, laundry detergents that advertise "Whiter than white" and
"Brighter than bright" are loaded with fluorescent dyes.
Cheers,
Tony

Lots of things will fluoresce or phosphoresce- finding out what will or
not is science. Just don't let your kid look at the bulb while the lamp
is on.
