Geomagnetic Field for Life |
Some articles on Space.com caught my eye, rekindling my memory of this
topic that I posted 6 years ago on this forum.
"The Red Planet is substantially exposed to the harshest elements of
space weather. Unlike Earth, which sits inside a protective magnetic
bubble called the magnetosphere, Mars does not have a global magnetic
field to shield it from solar flares and cosmic rays. Scientists
aren't sure why, but Mars' internal magnetic dynamo turned off about 4
billion years ago. After that, the solar wind gradually eroded the
martian atmosphere until, today, it is less than 1 percent as thick as
Earth's."
"Naked to Space Weather, Mars to Get Radiation Monitor"
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/missions/mars_hazards_010503.html
"The not-quite-so-swift gas clouds raced on to the orbit of Mars and
beyond. One of these radiation tempests exercised a little cosmic
irony by knocking out a radiation-monitoring instrument on NASA's Mars
Odyssey orbiter.
"Odyssey was, however, able to record how the blast compressed and
stretched the atmosphere of Mars, which is only about 1 percent as
dense as Earth's atmosphere. Mars has no globally protective magnetic
field like Earth, so the storm interacted much differently there than
it does here.
"'Substantial parts of the upper atmosphere [of Mars] escaped into
space,' Zurbuchen said.
"Zurbuchen said similar solar events over the course of 3.5 billion
years might have contributed to the loss of Mars' atmosphere and
water, a mystery researchers have been working on for decades since
pictures revealed that Mars likely had large amounts of flowing water
in the distant past."
"Fastest Space Storm on Record Reaches Edge of Solar System"
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/solar_storms_sun_040708.html
"New evidence from NASA's Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) spacecraft
supports a long-held suspicion that much of the Red Planet's
atmosphere was simply blown away -- by the solar wind."
"The Solar Wind at Mars"
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2001/ast31jan_1.htm
"Berkeley - Though Mars lacks a global protective magnetic shield like
that of the Earth, strong localized magnetic fields embedded in the
crust appear to be a significant barrier to erosion of the atmosphere
by the solar wind."
Berkeley Campus News: "Mars' patchwork magnetic field acts as array of
umbrellas to protect planet's atmosphere, according to new mapping
study by Mars Global Surveyor"
http://www.berkeley.edu/news/media/releases/2000/12/15_mars.html
Psalm 47:9
The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of
the God of Abraham: for the shields of the earth belong unto God: he
is greatly exalted.

Your religious beliefs have no place in physics.

It might walk like a duck and quack like a duck and fart like a
duck, but at day's end it isn't a duck.
