Gramp's wisdom of 74 years |
As a boy I acquired the nickname of Gramp, likely because my middle
name is Grant.
I'm curious about a lot of things, and after 74 years I know a little
bit about most of them, but not enough to get a college degree in
anything; at least not inclined to make the effort required.
Anyways I've been lucky: The electronic calculator and computer didn't
come along until I got a good shot at slide rules. They taught me the
rudiments of mathematics; which was always one of my greatest
weaknesses; along with spelling and a host of other stuff(;^)
With those rudiments of mathematics I was able to rationalize between
real mathematics, and the abstractions of pure mathematics; by
intuition, and I took to automatic calculators and eventually _simple_
computers like a duck takes to water:
Only recently in the last ten years or so did it dawn on me exactly
what is wrong with physics, and turns out that it is mostly the metric
system; with its rudimentary units of one kilogram per cubic meter!
That's the density of air I think, and is of some value for some
things; but AFAIK they didn't even consider that goods are sold, and
shipped by weight.
That's my main beef against metric SI: The fundamental; rudimentary
concepts of physics should be Length [distance and displacement in
space]; Force and weight [the pressure per area exerted on and/or by
"impenetrable" matter], and Time.
So, 'go on with you', waste your time if you will but you probably
won't teach me anything that I don't already know a little bit about.
Meanwhile the internet "newsgroups" give this old man the opportunity
to spread a little wisdom around. No sense keeping it all to
myself(;^)

lets hope your Alzheimer's leaves you without the use of your hands in short

The standard unit used to be a keg of nails, back when I was a
young whipper snapper. You got a lot more for your money back in
those days. Besides, you could use the empty kegs for chairs if
you didn't have money enough to buy a real chairs. If one hasn't
sat on a nail keg while eating some of Mom's home-made pumpkin
pie covered with a big dollop of home-made whipped cream (real
cream, too), they have really missed one of the finer pleasures
of life.

Yup. If you can't work it out on a slide rule, then it must not be
real math, huh?
Only recently in the last ten years or so did it dawn on me exactly

Huh?
That's the density of air I think,
Not quite.

What does how merchants sell and ship goods have to do with "what is

That's my main beef against metric SI: The fundamental; rudimentary

Make up your mind: force, weight, or pressure per area?

Well, if you only know a little bit about them, then you have lots of

I had help dimwit! All of those bridges are perfectly safe, and now
Connecticut has a "Snooper" and maintains a good inspection program:
I think those of you with hard earned degrees have every right to be
jealous, but it's a sad fact for you, that there are quite a few of us
without degrees who know how to design bridges; safely.
Incidently only a relatively few of my fellow engineers were jealous
of the fact that I earned the title of Highway Senior Engineer (Bridge
Design), and most of them were very generous when I asked for help
with design problems.

There's some truth to the display of senility at an early age, but the
middle name's the reason for the nickname.

Wisdom comes with age: It will even come to you if you live long

For me it came with the conviction that the rudiments of physics are
Length and FORCE; not Length and Mass.
Ultimately the sun _will_ go supernova, but not likely in our time.

How old do you think I am? Do you often make such statements without the data

Technically you are incorrect.. wisdom does not come with age, how many wise
trees and rocks do you know.
Same as respect, everyone who whines that they have been disrespected don't
realize that respect has to be earned, it isn't a right. The same with wisdom.

If it's not too insulting to any other old timers tuned in,
the saying that comes to mind here is "There's no fool like

I "take issue" with that: A really wise man is one with the sense to
know _when_ to keep his mouth shut.

Even though it makes you pompous educated people envious; i'm going to
continue to tell you what I think of you, and what physics really is;
so like it or not I'm going to keep on with them: I'm going to make my
"sweeping statments" now while I still can: Since I've got so little
time left, and they won't begin to fit on even the biggest tombstone.
