Object: heating bathroom with hot tap water - efficient?
hi there,
our bathroom has no electric heater installed. i am getting complaints
from the wife that this is a problem. The mother in law has also got
involved now.
before i go to the trouble of installing one and concealing to wiring
(complicated by the fact that the walls are tiled) i was wondering can
the room be heated efficiently to 35C by filling the tub or sink with
hot water a few minutes before using bath?
the volume of the room is 13 cubic meters . the bathroom temperature
is 15C and the hot water temp is 60C and is also electrically heated.
Could i make use of the existing water heater for heat or would it be
more efficient(energy wise) to install the dedicated heater?
thanks,
C

hi there,
The mother in law has also got involved now.

Oh boy are you in deep do do.
You will also need to know the conductivity the bath and the wall of the
room. A well insulated bath might not heat the room up quick enough to
compensate for the rate of heat loss through the walls/windows. The simple
way is to try it and see what happens.

Could i make use of the existing water heater
for heat or would it be more efficient(energy wise)
to install the dedicated heater?

Thats a very complex problem. For example what would you do with the bath
water once it's been used to warm the room? Would it still be hot enough to
use for bathing or would you have to waste it?
In general it the fewer steps a process has the more efficient it is (not
always true). If the room is poorly insulated I'd go for a fan heater and
heat the room only when needed.

Make the bathroom much smaller using Al foil, lower the ceiling and bring
the walls you can.

Pray for pneumonia and then treat holistically.

Install a heater - epecially if your water heater is, gasp, electric.
A wall-mounted radiant heater with a fan makes sense.

Radiant floor heating.. might cost some money, then again you said the wife
AND M-in-Law are involved so cost is secondary at this point.
