India bags $40-m CERN contract
TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ MONDAY, JANUARY 24, 2005 02:22:00 AM]
BANGALORE: Indian industry is now doing its bit for the European
atomic energy industry.
According to Mr Anil Kakodkar, chairman of the Atomic Energy
Commission, “India has received orders worth over $40 million to
supply sub-systems for building the world’s largest particle
accelerator, the large hadron collidor (lhc) near the Swiss and French
border.”
The contract for India has been won by the R&D centre of the Dept of
Atomic Energy — the Indore-based Centre for Advanced Technology (CAT)
from CERN (the European organisation for nuclear research).
Lhc is meant to investigate the fundamental aspects of matter ranging
from galaxies to stars and earth to trees and everything around us,”
according to Mr Alain Poncet, a scientist with CERN said.
CERN, which was founded in 1954 is the world’s largest particle
physics centre.
The centre is run by 20-member states, which includes Austria,
Belgium, Czech Republic and Germany. Mr Kakodkar and Mr Poncet were in
Bangalore to flag-off the last consignment PMPS Jacks meant for the
LHC.
The Jacks have been manufactured by the Bangalore-based Avasarala
Automation. Avasarala Automation’s CEO and managing director Mr T T
Mani, who was present during the handing over ceremony said that the
company would clock Rs 110 crore in revenues this fiscal.
On the CERN project, Mr Mani said that the order was valued at Rs 7
crore. The 18-year old company is engaged in the manufacture of
capital equipment which is used by the engineering and electronic
industry.
