Object: Kook Playoffs
I've been asked who I think is the kookiest kook on sci.physics. I
realized that, while I have my faves, it would unfair to simply select
one of the many.
There are three established ways to select. One would like they used
to do in college football, and have the coaches and sports writers
vote in a poll. Or they could do it like pro football, and have a
system of playoffs (like people want to do for college football).
Lastly, they could have the current system of college football, the so-
called BCS (bowl championship series.) This is a combination of the
two other systems - the teams are ranked by a computer program, and
the two top teams at the end compete for the title.
Therefore, perhaps Jeff Relf would be kind enough to write a program
in C++ to rank the kooks. And then at the end of the "season", the two
top kooks could battle on national television in either the "Kook Off"
or the "Kook Bowl."
The winner would be the undisputed WBC (World Bizarro Champion) of
sci.physics. They will win an all-expense paid trip to the mental
institution of their choice. The holder of the title will be champion
for one year, "unless he, she, or it becomes a Jehovah's Witness,
practicing Catholic, or the member of any other fanatic religious
cult, at which time the title will pass to the next runner-up."

Title: Yet another troll meter. 01 Jun 2007 03:11:45 AM
You could've initiated a conversation with anyone of 380 people
who showed their faces in Sci.Physics in the last week...
Yet it was Tom Potter that you ( Mr. Man ) engaged... Why ?
Is it because, like him, you're not sure why tax dollars
are being spent on things like Gravity Probe B
and the eviction and killing of Arabs after the 9/11 incident ?
For what it's worth ( as yet another troll meter )...

You are mistaken, Eric. The Relf entity is not sufficiently
sentient to care even about itself.

No. I would rather my tax dollars spent on Gravity Probe B than the
"War on drugs" (really the war to keep the price of illegal drugs
high, so profitable for dealers), or welfare for people who simply
can't be bothered to work or support their children. Oh, sorry.

Title: Sci.Physics' " Nicest ". ( i.e. least trollish ) 02 Jun 2007 04:29:18 AM
I'm around drug dealers because I'm poor, not because I sell drugs.
The only freebies I get are a discount on my phone bill and some food.
My two kids ( born 1983/84 ) are doing well as independent adults;
my ex remains married and well off.
I'm hardly working these days but my employer still gives me
500 per month. ( My rent is 430 per month ! )
I'm not following Frazir's advice because it's " not my thing ".
( Plus, it seems far " too good to be true " )
My boss might have to let me go soon,
so I might take that opertunity to " explore the streets ".
If I can adapt to it, and I like it, I might stay there.
I don't follow the " Bowl Championship Series ", Mr. Man;
but it might be fun to pit the " Nicest " against each other.
The winner would get nothing, per usual.
Yea, I'm now producing a " Niceness Rating ", not a " Troll Rating ".
As before, multiple passes recursively determine
who got ( and, therefore, spent ) the most votes.
Before each pass, votes are divided my the number of posts made;
but crossposting to 7 groups, for example, counts as 7 posts.
The ranking is by: " Niceness = Votes_Received / Posts_Made ".

Title: Re: Sci.Physics' " Nicest ". ( i.e. least trollish ) 03 Jun 2007 05:23:03 PM

This saddens me.

I don't follow the " Bowl Championship Series ", Mr. Man;
but it might be fun to pit the " Nicest " against each other.
The winner would get nothing, per usual.

Yea, I'm now producing a " Niceness Rating ", not a " Troll Rating ".
As before, multiple passes recursively determine
who got ( and, therefore, spent ) the most votes.

Before each pass, votes are divided my the number of posts made;
but crossposting to 7 groups, for example, counts as 7 posts.
The ranking is by: " Niceness = Votes_Received / Posts_Made ".

Niceness Rating ( 7.13 Days, 385 participants ):

hhc314_yahoo( 5.6, 2 ), Ken_S_Tucker( 4.97, 3 )
Greg_Hansen( 4.29, 3 )

Looks reliable so far.

... Mark_Teller( 4.16, 7 ), Dwib( 4.12, 1 )
Matt_Menge( 3.91, 5 ), gyansorova( 2.91, 1 ), Dev_Null( 2.91, 1 )

<...>

Androcles( .111, 295 ), Kumar( .106, 21 ), Uncle_Al( .103, 28 )
Edward_Green( .103, 6 )

Oops! Not as nice as Tom Potter? Or even Androcles or Uncle Al?

Bill_Hobba( .101, 24 )
Puppet_Sock( .099, 23 ), George_Dishman( .099, 40 )...

Ah... something amiss there: George Dishman is a very knowledgable
gentleman -- and unfailingly a gentleman. The only way I can see him
not being "nice" is by knowing more than almost everybody else: maybe
that's not playing fair. I've never seen him write a mean thing.

Title: A sixth of the planet lives on 30 dollars ( P.P.P. ) per month. 03 Jun 2007 08:26:37 PM
" www.Cotse.NET/users/jeffrelf/X.EXE " is a work in progress,
it changes all the time.
If you ( Mr. Green ) look at X.EXE's " Power Ranking ",
" www.Cotse.NET/users/jeffrelf/Phy_R.TXT ",
you'll see that it's no longer called a " Niceness Ranking ".
Please note: MicroSoft's " Internet Explorer 7 "
munges the whitespace of .TXT files ( as if they were HTML ),
" Right Click --> View Source " is the workaround.
I'm at " .103, 70 " to Mr. Dishman's " .122, 36 ".
Androcles' " .168, 237 " seems like a genuine bug to me.
but any score below 1 is nothing to brag about.
You replied " This saddens me. " when I wrote:
" My boss might have to let me go soon,

If I can adapt to it, and I like it, I might stay there. ".

About a billion people on this planet live on a dollar a day,
in Purchasing Power Parity ( i.e. what a dollar buys in the U.S. ).
I look for the cheapest rent in Seattle ( with shared bathrooms ),
and I'm paying 430 dollars per month, not 10 dollars a month ! ! !
These figures, from the World Bank and countries like China and India,
think in terms of the cost of _ Eating _ , as if _ Rent _ was free ! ! !
Well, it is, if you're good at " Urban camping "... ha ha, joke's on us.
Try renting an apartment in south Manhatten for 10 dollars a month,
so you'll still have 20 dollars per month for food and a cell phone.
Do you see the problem with these P.P.P. figures ?
The C.P.I. is just as stark-raving-mad ! ! !
At any rate, considering my limited choices ( if I lost my job ),
I'd _ Want _ to explore " urban camping " for awhile.
A sixth of the planet lives on 30 dollars ( P.P.P. ) per month,
....Why can't I ? I intend to find out, eventually.

About a billion people on this planet live on a dollar a day,

Those people do not pay $430/month for a shared room.
A lot of those people grow their own food. Do you?
Most of those people pay nothing to keep warm. Do you?
Most of those people let teeth fall out of their head when they rot.
Do you?
Virtually all of those people in that income bracket in the world have
a life expectancy of less than 45 years. How close are you to the end?
Most importantly, virtually all of those people are OFF THE NET. When
do you intend to do that?
If you want to live like 1/6th of the world, then it's important that
you do it whole hog. Where is your commitment?

Title: Seattle is rich, so I don't have to be. 05 Jun 2007 10:00:26 PM
A sixith of the world lives on 30 dollars a day Mr. PD,
I can live on less than that.
Seattle is rich, so I don't have to be.
I'm 47 years old, with no medical history.
It's anyone's guess as to how long I might live.
So long as I remain healthy and near the Univ. of Wash., Seattle,
I'll have access to powerful computers ( and kids who need me ).
Not a dime of my money is required.
Stick that in your C.P.I. and P.P.P. models.
Bill Gates just donated .105 gigadollars to the U.W.
to creat the " Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation ".
The U.W. is chipping in too, bringing the total to .125 gigadollars.
The money is to be spent over ten years staring this October,
existing facilities ( near me ) will be used, no new buildings.
They're at: " www.HealthMetricsAndEvaluation.ORG ".
" Whenever someone would ask [ Bill Gates ] for money,
according to Lopez, Gates would quiz them about
their '' burden of disease '' measurement. "
...
" While people had previously focused on illnesses such as
malaria, AIDS and tuberculosis, Murray said they found
three problems were being largely ignored:

mental health, traffic injuries and heart disease/diabetes. ".

This is truly scary; Gates is a menace of Hitlerian proportions:
"The Institute cannot guarantee improved health outcomes, but it can
guarantee a much stronger foundation of publicly available evidence
that empowers policymakers, donors, practitioners, researchers, local
and global decision-makers, and others to strategically allocate
limited resources."
You'd better hope, Jeff, that your personal "Health Metrics" allow you
to make that strategic cut.

Title: women/kids/drug addicts are the big healthcare users. 06 Jun 2007 01:25:26 PM
I'm not worried about anyone's " healthcare initiatives " Mr. Cain.
If you don't count my ex ( who divorced me in 1988 )
I've used almost no healthcare services
since becoming an independent adult ( say 1978 ).
I paid for my vasectomy at the start of 1991, that's about it.
Hmm... women/kids/drug addicts are the big healthcare users.
