Modern chaotic inflation cosmology does seem to have only one magnetic
monopole per inflation to Big Bang in Max Tegmark's Level 1 "Hubble
horizon" expanding universe.
Yang had an alternative "compact gauge group" Ansatz to above magnetic
monopole hypothesis for quantization of electric charge. That is
basically single-valuedness of the micro-quantum amplitudes and the
macro-quantum order parameters when charges are moved around closed
loops. This is "Flux without flux."
The kind of experiment I allude to in

Dirac String, Magnetic Monopole, Quantization of Electric Charge
"the quasiparticles of the fractional quantum Hall effect, which are not
basic but rather emerge as collective excitations involving ordinary
electrons, also cannot exist in isolation, and they have fractional
charge and anomalous statistics!" Frank Wilczek Nobel Lecture
Unlike classical EM the vector potential A determines quantum behavior
of the electron as in the Bohm-Aharonov effect. The loop integral
('&'2|A) =/=0 determined by topological defects makes a visible shift in
where the single electron is detected in space even though dA = 0 at any
classical position of the electron. Furthermore, "we have to introduce a
semi-infinite string along which the vector potential is singular"
(Thouless p. 18) Similarly in superfluids and superconductors "there are
