Object: London to get high definition broadband
An educated workforce is a nation's most precious resource and
the internet is bringing knowledge to the planet . The indian govt can
leap ahead by mandating fibre optic to the door which can bring
gigabit band and 3d modelling.
Londoners could soon see broadband speeds triple to 24Mbps, thanks to
a recently launched company that has promised to deliver ADSL2+
Internet services.
Be, a new Internet service provider, said the service will dwarf
current top speeds of 8Mbps, and will be available in the capital in
three months' time.
The company is currently keeping its pricing strategy a secret but
said the service, which works over local-loop unbundling, will be
"competitive".
The ISP is one of the first operators in the UK to use French telco
Alcatel's routing equipment and technology.
Boris Ivanovic, co-founder of Be, has already tried his hand at the
broadband market. In 2001 he bought Swedish ISP Bostream, which
launched 26Mbps broadband.
Ivanovic said: "The deregulation of the market makes this a very
exciting time for the UK and Be is here to make the most of it,
offering customers the full capability of ADSL2+ from launch. There is
no reason to drag out the increase in speed and launch in steps of 1Mb
or 2Mb when the capability is there to offer the maximum speeds
available — which is what Be is all about."
"This will be good for high-definition images and open the market for
other television things. Although it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg
situation — are there those services currently available? Sometimes
these companies neglect what customers actually require from the
service."

NTL trials 18Mbps broadband

Broadband speeds of 18Mbps could soon be available if NTL's ADSL2+
trial is successful

Broadband speeds could soon reach new heights as cable operator NTL
pilots ADSL2+ — a technology that offers a maximum download speeds of
18Mbps.
Such rates are only possible over short distances, but NTL says that
95 percent of homes are within one kilometre of its high-speed fibre
network. This means ADSL2+ should run at high speeds over the copper
wire that runs between NTL's roadside cabinets and individual homes.
"The field trials are to determine the technological potential of
these next-generation broadband services and evaluate the operational
benefits of ADSL2+," said an NTL spokesman. "Our fibre-rich network
means that we have the potential to provide customers with multiple
services through a single high-speed IP connection."
The company also been testing streaming of high-definition broadcasts
over its IP fibre network.
BT is planning to begin trialling ADSL2+ this year. However, only a
small proportion of its customers live within one kilometre of their
local telephone exchange, which could limit BT's ADSL2+ top speeds.
Few details of BT's ADSL2+ trial have been released as yet.
BT's wholesale division is also about to begin trialling ADSL at
speeds up to 8Mbps — a four-fold increase on its current top speed.
However, it is likely that only homes and businesses within a few
kilometres of their local telephone exchange will be able to get such
rates.

yes, yes, yes,
Let's do some preaching..
Do you know that all it takes to do some Mathematics and/or Physics is one
pencil, one paper, one desk (oh, and a half decent modicum of intelligence).
To the US folk, yes, George Thorogood probably penned that track before 'One
Whiskey, One Bourbon, One Beer).
You don't need a computer, you don't need a textbook, you don't need
bugger-all (as we say) except a pencil, a desk and some paper.
Now, I know what you're going to say, that's not what I meant.
Maybe it isn't but it doesn't really matter.
Forget televison, internet, any distraction,
Sit down, with a writing implement in hand, a piece of paper, think hard,
and scribble
It is preachy I know, but if you avoid the worlds distractions maybe you'll
generate something notable.
Me, I'm just a lawn-mower... etc
Good Luck

right. more means we have to stay connected and informed, more overwhlemed
we become with info we can not use, and less productive we become, not to
mention more bored and irritated at such gadgets, and poorer for spending
time, money and energy. actually, i feel a dull feeling in my head.

excerpt
Be Unlimited
Be Unlimited have already started public tests for their ADSL2+
service with the company expected to offer its super fast service from
exchanges in the London area, with out-of-towners following in the
next couple of months.
Businesses signing up for the service will be able to enjoy the
service for nowt until the end of September this year, after which
they'll pay £70 (~$128 ~€102) per month.
Individual punters can also cash in on the freebie until the end of
September, after which they will be charged £20 (~$36 ~€29) per month.
Temptingly, there's no connection fee for new users with a free
Wi-Fi-enabled modem lobbed in for no charge (the company will be using
DSLAMs from Alcatel, and a Thompson 716g V5 wireless modem, optimised
for VoIP and video-streaming applications.)
"This pilot would be fantastic for small businesses, but we're not
setting up for time-critical businesses such as city traders," warned
a Be spokesperson (in other words, "it's a pilot scheme - so expect
some glitches!").

Oh, it's quite true. OTOH the number of "known" things which just
ain't true is becoming greater and more widespread. I can't wait to
