Object: Man VS bird
Hi !
We have all seen birds perched unharmed on an electrical power line.
I would like to know if a man will be electrified if he hangs on such a
power line.
Thanks,
Luc

If he touches nothing else at a different potential, then he will not be
hurt. Keep your eye out for a program on public television about
linemen. It's very interesting. They frequently work on high voltage
lines by attaching themselves to the line. On some of the larger
transmission lines on the big utility towers, they use a kind of small
"cable car" to move along a line and perform maintenance on the line.

What's OK for bird is OK for man when it comes to power lines.

Assuming that, like the bird, he is touching nothing else, no.

I had a conversation with a friend on that issue and he keeps telling me
that the capacitance of the human body combined with the alternative current
of a power line will induce a current inside the body of a man that will
kill the man even if he's not topuching anything.
I initially tought that the answer is no to my question but I'm not so sure
right now has my friend says that I'm making the mistake of considering the
question thinking in terms of a constant voltage instead of an alternative
current.
Does anyone has a definitive answer on that matter or can direct me to a
paper on the subject ?

Your friend is an idiot.
You could go through the exercise to calculate the capacitance of a human
body 10 meters or so in the air (you will find it is very, very small)
and then calculate the resultant current.
Or, you could consider that there is no significant current due to
capacitance of the power line itself which can run hundreds of miles
and is a much bigger (though still small) capacitor.
As someone else noted, workers regularly work on power lines while
suspended from them.

Not if he does not ground himself or touch another wire.

Electrified, or electrocuted?

Indeed. The reason I asked, is because I thought, on the
show I saw, they said the workers became electrified (charged?)
while on the line.
But no current passed through to ground, so no harm done.
True?? Anyone??
