Object: Measuring Visual Angle-How To Do It?
I need a way to measure visual angle of a target in the field. I'm
asking because I figured out a way of estimating target range and size
from two measurements of visual angle.
I was thinking of a cursor with three lines-one at the left, one in
the center and one at the right. The user puts the center line on the
target and then turns a knob until the target is inside the left and
right lines. Then the amount of visual angle subtended by the target
is determined from how far apart the lines are.
Any suggestions on how to measure visual angle are welcome. Thank you.

A few google searches turned up some techniques. One way is with an
illuminated reticle eyepiece that has a finely calibrated linear scale.
Another is with what is called a "Filar Micrometer" which is a microscope
eyepiece with a double crosshair. One crosshair is movable and driven with a
micrometer thread and drum scale to read out the linear separation from the
fixed crosshair.

Err... I think it may have been done...

You put indicators on the knobs and calibrate against something known.
Or you could just go buy a WWII surplus rangefinder or even a modern,
laser hunting range finder.

Or a sextant.

This sounds like a reinvention of stadia. That has been used by surveyors
and others for over a hundred years. It was used by submariners to estimate
range to targets from the inception of periscopes.
Good Luck

What size angle(s)? What precision? What distance to target?
You probably already own a pair of convenient 1 degree instruments for
distant targets. Hold out your thumbnail at arm's length as a transit.
