I have to leave shortly, but I'll just mention for now that the
"colliding brane" theory of the origin of the Universe is Steinhardt's
(Princeton U.), Turok's (U. Cambridge, U.K.) and others' Ekpyrotic
Universe theory, and one plausible interpretation is that generalized
friction was involved.
