You seem to assume that anything worth publishing will be formally
published.
"People go into the dead end, but it is not considered worthwhile to
put up a sign that says "dead end" to keep others from following you.
"Dead end" is not publishable."
In a peer review dominated formal publishing context, it is not
"prudent" for peer reviewers to put up a sign that says "dead end"
if the issue is not "believed" to be a dead end by the majority.
It is not even "prudent" to publish something that may look
promising to get out of a dead end but that the peer reviewers
think will be frowned upon by the majority.
Careers are at stake. Flow of grants for continued extensive
analysis of dead end research is at stake. A bottomless pit.
